(continued comment that was cut off).
...told me to dump the car. Instead we replaced the hoses and back maintenance and continue to drive it (still with never having had a breakdown).
My husband had a small fender bender a couple years ago & our insurance company totalled the car for about $3600 rather than fix it. We opted to buy it back for $500 and replace the radiator, bumper and hood for about $1000. We pocketed the other $2100 and continue to drive the car to this day with a salvage title. We'll just drive it until it drops since it isn't worth anything in resale, and we LOVE it. It's roomy, comfortable and reliable. We're glad that we bought American.

I have owned my 2000 Sable since 2001 (I bought it used and it had been a rental car prior to my purchase). It has been an amazing car! It has literally NEVER broken down and my only complaint has been that a couple of years ago we started having trouble getting the car out of park (which I now see is a known defect and i can have it repaired via a recall notice) and just recently the brake lights started being a problem (which is apparently the same recall problem). One other annoying problem is that all but one or two lights on the dashboard have burned out and replacing those bulbs would entail too much expense and time. However, given that the car is now 11 years old and has about 170,000 miles on it, I really have no serious complaints (well, the gas mileage could be better, I suppose... esp. in town driving...it's actually pretty remarkable on long highway trips).
About 4 or 5 years ago I had let some maintenance issues slip and a mechanic actually told me to dump
