BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 F 800 S and F 800 ST motorcycles

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 F 800 S and F 800 ST motorcycles manufactured August 2006 through January 2009. Due to incorrect tolerances, the rear wheel drive bearing and rear axle may wear.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 2,608 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 F 800 S and F 800 ST motorcycles manufactured August 2006 through January 2009. Due to incorrect tolerances, the rear wheel drive bearing and rear axle may wear.
Consequeces:: Bearing and axle wear may affect handling and control of the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective action:: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the wheel bearing, and if necessary, replace the bearing and rear axle, at no charge. The recall began on January 10, 2014. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

2009 BMW F 800 ST Complaints
The contact owns a 2009 BMW F-800 ST. The contact stated that the ABS warning light was displayed on the instrument panel. While driving the vehicle, the contact experienced loose handling and control of the motorcycle coming from the rear wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who discovered that the ABS sensor on the rear wheel had been scraped by a timing ring. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V549000 (Wheels); which the contact linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.;
