BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 model year R-model motorcycles

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 model year R-model motorcycles, model year 2005-2012 K-model motorcycles, model year 2010-2011 S 1000 model motorcycles, and model year 2006-2010 HP2 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the fuel pump flange (and the auxiliary fuel pump flange if equipped) could develop cracks and leak fuel.

The recall was influenced by the Office of Defects Investigation with about 50,184 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 model year R-model motorcycles, model year 2005-2012 K-model motorcycles, model year 2010-2011 S 1000 model motorcycles, and model year 2006-2010 HP2 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the fuel pump flange (and the auxiliary fuel pump flange if equipped) could develop cracks and leak fuel.
Consequeces:: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
Corrective action:: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will either reinforce the fuel pump flange or replace the pump, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 16, 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW K 1200 R SPORT MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A STRONG GASOLINE ODER COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THERE WAS GASOLINE LEAKING FROM THE FUEL PUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY WAS LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V617000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,122 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 13,000.;
2007 BMW R 1200 S Complaints
The contact owns a 2007 BMW R 1200S Motorcycle. The contact stated while riding at approximately 35 MPH, there was gasoline leaking from under the fuel tank onto the cylinder head. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated. The contact had the motorcycle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The motorcycle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact had researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V617000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. The contact stated the fuel pump was cracked and had it replaced on 5/29/2024 and requesting to be reimbursed as this was a recall. The contact called BMW inquiring about the recall but was informed there was no recall at this time.;
2007 BMW R 1200 ST Complaints
THE FUEL PUMP ON MY R 1200 ST MOTORCYCLE IS MOUNTED INSIDE THE FUEL TANK AND PROVIDES FUEL UNDER PRESSURE TO THE PRESSURE REGULATOR. FUEL EXITS THE TANK THROUGH A QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING SCREWED INTO THE PLATE ON WHICH THE FUEL PUMP IS MOUNTED. DURING A ROUTINE INSPECTION I NOTICED CRACKS AROUND THE THREADED HOLE THAT THE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING SCREWS INTO. BOTH THE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING AND THE PLATE WITH THE THREADED HOLE ARE PLASTIC. IF THE CRACKS CONTINUE TO GROW, FUEL UNDER PRESSURE WILL LEAK ONTO MYSELF AND HOT ENGINE PARTS, CAUSING SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND INJURY. THE PARTS IN QUESTION ARE USED ON NUMEROUS OTHER BMW MOTORCYCLE MODELS, INCLUDING THE OTHER R 1200 MODELS, K 1200 MODELS, AND K 1300 MODELS.;
2008 BMW K 1200 GT Complaints
THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE ON THIS 2008 BMW K1200GT IS LEAKING ONTO THE ENGINE BELOW.
