BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2017 BMW 640i, 640i xDrive, 650i, 650i xDrive, M6, 535i, 535i xDrive, 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, M4, X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, i3, i8, Rolls-Royce Dawn, Mini Clubman Cooper, Clubman Cooper S, Cooper All4, Cooper S All4, Mini 4-Door Cooper, Cooper S, Mini 2-Door Cooper, Cooper S, John Cooper Works and 2016 BMW 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, 550i xDrive, M5 and 535d vehicles. The affected vehicles have seat- mounted side air bag inflator initiators that may fail to ignite during a crash.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 3,506 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2017 BMW 640i, 640i xDrive, 650i, 650i xDrive, M6, 535i, 535i xDrive, 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, M4, X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, i3, i8, Rolls-Royce Dawn, Mini Clubman Cooper, Clubman Cooper S, Cooper All4, Cooper S All4, Mini 4-Door Cooper, Cooper S, Mini 2-Door Cooper, Cooper S, John Cooper Works and 2016 BMW 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, 550i xDrive, M5 and 535d vehicles. The affected vehicles have seat- mounted side air bag inflator initiators that may fail to ignite during a crash.
Consequeces:: If the air bag inflator initiator fails to ignite, the seat-mounted air bag will not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
Corrective action:: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag modules, free of charge. The recall began February 6, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Vehicle: 2016 BMW 528i xDrive (VIN: [XXX]) Safety Issue / Defect Description: Strong, hazardous raw gasoline fumes began entering the passenger cabin and trunk area. On XXX, the vehicle was brought to an authorized dealership (BMW of Sterling) for diagnostic evaluation. The dealership's technician conducted a multi-point inspection and produced video evidence documenting fluid leaking from the top of the plastic fuel tank. The dealership issued Repair Order Quote #$4,824.92 to "REPLACE FUEL TANK DUE TO FUEL LEAK" and declared the vehicle unsafe. Despite diagnosing a structural fuel tank leak that allows raw gasoline and fumes to migrate into the cabin—presenting an immediate fire, explosion, and toxic vapor risk—BMW of North America and the dealership have refused warranty coverage or goodwill assistance, claiming the tank is "not leaking actively enough" under Service Bulletin SI B01 03 22 (NHTSA ID: MC-10212779-9999). An uncontained raw fuel leak on a plastic fuel tank is a critical safety defect that requires immediate investigation. 2016 BMW 535D Complaints
On [XXX], the coolant connector flange on my 2016 BMW 535d (VIN: [XXX] ) catastrophically failed, causing complete coolant loss. I immediately contacted BMW of Las Vegas and was instructed to drive it in despite fluid visibly leaking through the undercarriage. The next day, [XXX], BMW performed Recall 21V-907 (EGR cooler replacement), which involved draining and reconnecting the coolant circuit—but they left the failed flange in place. The failed flange connects directly to the new EGR coolant return hose installed under the recall. BMW had full access to the part but chose not to inspect or replace it. The dealer submitted a consequential damage claim to BMW North America, which was denied. The vehicle remains at the dealership unrepaired. This failure poses serious safety risks. Driving with active coolant loss could cause overheating, engine failure, or fire. Had I not stopped, this could’ve led to mechanical catastrophe. BMW re-pressurized the cooling system into a visibly broken flange, creating an unsafe condition. The failure was confirmed by BMW technicians and documented in a repair order. No warning lamps were active at the time of failure. I currently have an open case with BMW North America, but no contact has been made. I am requesting NHTSA review this matter as BMW failed to fully remedy a safety defect and ignored collateral damage tied directly to the recalled system. The failed part is available for inspection. 2016 BMW 550I Complaints
MY 2016 BMW 550I XDRIVE M SPORT IS USING/BURNING ONE QUART OF OIL EVERY 750-800 MILES, THE ODOMETER READS 36,343 MILES, VERY LOW MILES FOR THIS CAR TO BE USING THAT MUCH OIL, I BOUGHT IT IN AUGUST OF 2019 WITH 34,654 MILES ON IT. YOU CAN SEE THAT I DON'T DRIVE IT THAT MUCH, HAVE NEVER HAD THE CAR ON ANY KIND OF TRACK. THE BMW DEALERSHIP IN SCHERERVILLE INDIANA SAYS THIS KIND OF OIL CONSUMPTION IS NORMAL.!!! THERE IS NO WAY THIS EXPENSIVE LUXURY CAR SHOULD BURN ANY KIND OF OIL WITH THIS LOW OF MILES. I REALLY WANT THIS COMPLAINT TO BE HEARD!! THANK YOU.;
2017 BMW 430I Complaints
Plastic oil filter housing part cracked and leaked all my anti freeze out on I 95. This incident caused me to have my car towed 3 times to various dealer and shops for repair. Total cost of this repair was approximately 2K with parts and labor + 300. for towing. No warning from BMW - this could have caused myself and others great harm out there on 95 and if I had to drive farther to find a safe place to pull over it would have destroyed my engine.;
