BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 BMW 330e iPerformance, i3 Rex, i3 Sport Rex, X5 xDrive40e, i3 BEV, i3 Sport BEV and 2019 i8 and i8 Roadster vehicles and 2018-2019 530e iPerformance, 530e xDrive iPerformance and 740Le xDrive iPerformance vehicles. Capacitors within the TurboCord Portable Chargers may fail, possibly resulting in a shock hazard or a fire.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 3,501 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 BMW 330e iPerformance, i3 Rex, i3 Sport Rex, X5 xDrive40e, i3 BEV, i3 Sport BEV and 2019 i8 and i8 Roadster vehicles and 2018-2019 530e iPerformance, 530e xDrive iPerformance and 740Le xDrive iPerformance vehicles. Capacitors within the TurboCord Portable Chargers may fail, possibly resulting in a shock hazard or a fire.
Consequeces:: An electrical shock or a fire can increase the risk of injury or death.
Corrective action:: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the charging cable, and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 22, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2018 BMW 330E Complaints
The contact owns a 2018 BMW 330E. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated, and the vehicle became inoperable. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The message "Drivetrain - Check Soon" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and was diagnosed with engine failure, melted cooling hoses, and starter failure. The vehicle was repaired by the dealer under warranty and was then towed to an independent mechanic where cooling hoses were replaced. The starter failure was not addressed. The dealer was contacted about the repair of the starter failure based on NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V441000 (Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,436.;
2018 BMW I3 Complaints
After reviewing BMW’s warranty documentation, I believe that the part replaced — specifically the evaporative emissions (EVAP) valve or purge valve AND vapor canister (active charcoal canister) — should be covered under the California Extended Emissions Warranty (TZEV) for my 2018 BMW i3 with Range Extender. According to BMW’s California Emissions Warranty documentation (pages 14), the Evaporative Canister / Active Charcoal Filter is explicitly listed as a covered component under the Extended Emissions Warranty applicable to BMW i3 Range Extender vehicles in California. Furthermore, page 18 of the same document outlines the California Emission Control System Limited Warranty (TZEV), which provides coverage for emissions-related components for up to 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Additionally, since we purchased this vehicle in 2021, we have meticulously maintained it and kept detailed fuel and service records. The vehicle has only been refueled NINE times total of 17 GALLONS of fuel with each refueling carefully logged by date and milage. The most recent refueling occurred on March 28, 2025, prior to our service visit at your dealership. These records demonstrate that the fuel and emissions systems have been minimally used, making premature failure of the vapor canister highly unusual. WE have never over filled the tank and dealer is claiming / assuming that is the cause. We believe this is a design flaw on BMW and we do pay the price. Many frustrated BMW i3 owners with similar issue and no help from BMW. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THIS SAME ISSUE ALSO A BMW RECALL BULLETIN ( SIB 01 05 24 ) I3 REX EVAP SYSTEM PURGE VENT VALVE EXT LTD WTY PLEASE MAKE BMW TO RECALL / REPAY ALL I3 OWNERS WITH THIS ISSUE. WHAT IS THE POINT OF AN EXTENDED WARRANTY IF NO ONE IS ENFORCING IT !;
2018 BMW X5 Complaints
The windshield wiper reservoir leaks fluid. The reservoir has been filled by the dealership and I was informed it is a safety hazard to not have it repaired. After some research, this is a common issue in 2016-2018 BMW X5 models.;
2019 BMW 530E Complaints
I learned from Carfax on July 12, 2026 that a recall has been issued on my vehicle, a 2019 BMW 530e -- "Recall 26V-441:540 Engine Starter". The recall relates to the engine starter and I understand from my research that the engine could catch on fire, even when the car is turned off. Now 5 weeks later, I have not received ANY notification from BMW about the recall, the hazard it presents, nor the advice apparently to park the car away from structures. All of my information is coming from Carfax. And there is apparently still no remedy available! This seems utterly unacceptable -- both no communication from BMW or a dealer and no remedy available after almost 6 weeks.;
