BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 1999-2000 323i and 328i and 2000 323Ci and 328Ci vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) manufactured by Takata. These inflators do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 34,396 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 1999-2000 323i and 328i and 2000 323Ci and 328Ci vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) manufactured by Takata. These inflators do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
Consequeces:: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
Corrective action:: BMW will mail interim notices informing owners of the safety risk on January 17, 2020. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy becomes available. Dealers will inspect the driver air bag inflators and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. BMW mailed interim notices informing owners of the safety risk on January 17, 2020. 2000 BMW 323I Complaints
I was driving normally, and made a right hand turn onto a street when the driver door airbag and driver curtain airbag deployed suddenly. The engine shut off and the hazards turned on automatically, and I pulled off the road to a safe location. I was able to restart the engine to bring the vehicle onto the tow truck. As far as I am aware there was no impact, and the outside of the car is not damaged. I am able to see some other NHTSA reports of this random deployment happening with other 3 series models, specifically 2000 model year vehicles like mine. I am unsure of what caused this, I can only assume a faulty sensor is the cause.;

Subject: Urgent Safety Concern — 2000 BMW 328 Ci — Error Codes P1622, P0304, P0301 — Second Airbag Recall 21V-401 — Request for Engineering Investigation BMW of North America, LLC 300 Chestnut Ridge Road Woodcliff Lake, NJ 07677 May 9, 2026 ?RE: 2000 BMW 328 Ci (VIN: [insert VIN]) — Multiple DME Fault Codes — Second Airbag Recall (21V-401) — Suspected Electronic Interference ?To the Office of Customer Relations and Vehicle Safety: I am writing to formally document a serious safety concern regarding my 2000 BMW 328 Ci, which is currently subject to the second airbag recall in this vehicle's history (Takata NADI recall 21V-401). The vehicle is exhibiting diagnostic fault codes in the DME (Digital Motor Electronics) that indicate possible electronic interference with the engine control and safety systems. ?Diagnostic Evidence — May 7, 2026 On May 7, 2026, a professional BMW diagnostic scan (iSCAN S/N 70EB2) revealed the following active fault codes in the DME: 1. P1622 (MAP cooling activation fault) — Present. This code indicates a communication fault between the DME and the EWS (immobilizer) system. In my research, this code is consistent with RF interference on the DME/EWS communication line.? 2. P0304 (misfire cylinder 4) — Present and continuous. The misfire on cylinder 4 is persistent and does not respond to component replacement.? 3. P0301 (misfire cylinder 1) — Present and intermittent. The misfire on cylinder 1 is also persistent but less frequent.? ?Component Swapping Test — Critical Finding The technician performed a component swapping test: * Spark plugs and ignition coils from cylinder 1 were moved to cylinder 3? * Spark plugs and ignition coils from cylinder 4 were moved to cylinder 6? * Result: The misfires remained on cylinders 1 and 4. They did not move to cylinders 3 or 6.? This test conclusively rules out the spark plugs and ignition coils as the cause of the misfires. The cause is upstream — in the DME module itself, or in the wiring/signal path;
2000 BMW 328I Complaints
May of 2019 my driver door airbag, driver side front to rear pillar airbag bursted open while driving 30mph on a flat smooth road. Took to BMW dealer and they informed me that there was a recall and they'd look into it. Days later picked up my car and they said they went off from aftermarket items on my car. Which is absurdly inaccurate. I'm an auto mechanic of 10 years and nothing I've done to my car has any effect on the airbag or safety systems of my car period. They were extremely rude, didn't want to fix the over $5000 of damage that was done to my interior. Treated me like I was some idiot. And didn't offer me a loaner vehicle for the 3 days they had my car either like they guarantee they do in the event of recalls.;
