BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2023 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, M340i xDrive, M3, 330e, 330e xDrive, 430i Convertible, 430i xDrive, M440i, 2022-2023 430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive, i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50 vehicles. During a service visit, a replacement electronic control unit (ECU) may have been installed with incorrect programming, which can cause the automatic door locking (ADL) function to not lock the doors as intended.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 120 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2023 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, M340i xDrive, M3, 330e, 330e xDrive, 430i Convertible, 430i xDrive, M440i, 2022-2023 430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive, i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50 vehicles. During a service visit, a replacement electronic control unit (ECU) may have been installed with incorrect programming, which can cause the automatic door locking (ADL) function to not lock the doors as intended.
Consequeces:: Doors that do not lock as intended while the vehicle is in motion may open during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Corrective action:: Dealers will update the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2023 BMW 330E Complaints
On one occasion, the car automatically applied the breaks and parked itself while driving on a main road. On another occasion, while parking the car at the home it accelerated aggressively and almost crashed into the garage- driver lost complete control of the car. On a separate occasion, the gauge console (screen behind the steering wheel) became morphed and could not show the MPH- an electrical glitch it seemed. The last occasion the car stopped and parked itself while accelerating or braking on the highway.;
2023 BMW 330I Complaints
I own a 2023 BMW 330i xDrive. The factory passenger-side/right-front inner LED daytime running light has failed while the other headlight functions continue to operate normally. The vehicle has not been involved in a collision, the headlight has not been physically damaged, and no aftermarket DRL or headlight components have been installed. The affected factory BMW/HELLA right-front headlamp is BMW part number 63 11 7 886 944 (63117886944), with HELLA number 7886664-03 and HELLA assembly number 1EX 016.437-46. I was advised that correcting the failed integrated DRL may require replacement of the complete headlight assembly rather than replacement of a simple bulb or inexpensive serviceable lighting component. This makes the repair extremely expensive. Even used OEM assemblies can cost close to $2500+, while a new OEM headlight, labor, programming/coding, and related components can make the total repair cost substantially higher. I am concerned that an integrated LED daytime running light is failing prematurely and potentially forcing owners to replace an entire expensive headlight assembly because one DRL element has stopped functioning. I have also seen reports from other BMW owners experiencing similar DRL and LED headlight failures. BMW has previously issued technical service information involving LED daytime running light/headlight failures on BMW vehicles where the affected headlamp and LED module required replacement. Because this is an exterior lighting component intended to improve vehicle visibility and because the failure can result in a very costly headlight replacement, I believe this issue should be reviewed as a potential recurring defect. I am requesting that NHTSA compare this complaint with other exterior-lighting, headlight, and daytime-running-light complaints involving 2023–2024 BMW 3 Series/G20 vehicles and determine whether there is a pattern of premature DRL failure that warrants a defect investigation or safety recall.;
2023 BMW 430I Complaints
The contact owns a 2023 BMW 430i. The contact received notice of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V056000 (Electrical System). The contact stated that that on several occasions when starting the vehicle there was a hesitation while starting the vehicle. The contact added that the hesitation while starting the vehicle using the key fob was more prevalent. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.;
2023 BMW I4 Complaints
The steering wheel would suddenly become stiff (frozen or locked) during normal driving especially during turning. When it happened, I lost total control of the car causing dangerous situations on the road. A warning message appeared stating: "Changed steering effort, drive moderately and contact service center." At a BMW dealership, the problem was reproduced and confirmed. They replaced 12 Volt battery, and the car was released. The new 12 volt battery didn't help the steeling issue. After a few weeks, the steeling system completely failed. The car has to be towed to BMW dealership for repair. It was identified that the steeling issue was caused by premature failure of the BMW electronic power steering system.;
