Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Prius Prime, 2023-2026 Prius, and 2025-2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Water may enter the rear door switch and cause a short circuit, allowing an unlocked rear door to open unexpectedly.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 141,286 units affected.

Description:: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Prius Prime, 2023-2026 Prius, and 2025-2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Water may enter the rear door switch and cause a short circuit, allowing an unlocked rear door to open unexpectedly.
Consequeces:: A door that unexpectedly opens while the vehicle is moving increases the risk of injury.
Corrective action:: Dealers will modify the rear door switch circuits, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed July 13, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 26TB03 and 26TA03. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall number 24V274. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy performed.

2024 TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME Complaints
The contact owned a 2024 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle that was traveling towards the contact's vehicle at approximately 50 MPH. The contact stated that during the impact, the steering wheel detached and hit the driver's body. The air bags failed to deploy. There was no warning light illuminated after the crash. The vehicle went into Crash mode and automatically connected with OnStar, which called emergency units. The contact stated that the entire front ends of both vehicles were destroyed. Both vehicles were towed to an impound lot, where they were totaled. The contact's vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. A police report was filed. There was no property damage. The contact was transported by ambulance to the ER, where he was treated for multiple injuries: fractured ribs, fractured right foot, seat belt injury in the lower abdomen that caused internal bleeding and damage to the stomach, mild concussion, several body bruises and lacerations. Additionally, the contact stated that he was receiving treatment for lower back pain due to a displaced disc. No further information was available. The failure mileage was approximately 35,981.;
2026 TOYOTA PRIUS Complaints
- Windshield washer fluid reservoir level going low. It is available for inspection. - Safety concern: No liquid to wipe off windshield particles, dirt that may hinder driver visibility. - The issue was brought up to Jaymee of South Coast Toyota, Costa Mesa CA when Prius was taken for delivery May 16,2026. Request to top off made but not performed by dealer on same date. Per Jaymee, dealer top off liquid. - Personally filled reservoir 3 times only to see fluid level to go down. No liquid noticed underneath the Prius. - Further communicated issue with Jaymee and decided to make appointment with Tustin Toyota, Tustin CA., since Prius is under warranty. - May 30, 2026 Tustin Toyota: Prius brought in to dealership to check issue. Per report none found and did stress test. Had discussion with Bobby Ramirez-service manager. Per Bobby, they could not find anything wrong ??? - Toyota headquarters in Texas has been notified and spoke to Austin. He said a case has been opened and will get back to me this week of June 8th.;
2026 TOYOTA PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID Complaints
A vehicle was sold and delivered while under an active stop-sale safety recall (manufacturer recall 26TB03). The recall was not disclosed at the time of purchase. When questions were raised about whether any recalls were present, the issue was dismissed and no recall information was provided. According to the recall documentation, the potential defect involves the rear door system possibly opening while the vehicle is in motion. Because the stop-sale indicates the vehicle should not have been sold, the safety risk is that the vehicle was driven with occupants in the rear seats without anyone being informed of the potential hazard. This created a risk to the people inside the vehicle and to others on the road. The problem was later confirmed through the manufacturer’s official recall database and the published recall information. The issue has not been inspected or repaired by the manufacturer or dealer because the remedy is not yet available. The defect is not something the owner can see or detect on their own.;
