BMW of North America LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 320i, 328i, 320i xDrive, and 328i xDrive sedans; model year 2014 328i xDrive Sports Wagons; model year 2012-2013 528i and 528i xDrive sedans, model year 2013-2014 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles and model year 2012-2014 Z4 sDrive28i roadsters. Due to insufficient lubrication, the vacuum pump that supplies brake power assistance may fail.

The recall was influenced by the Office of Defects Investigation with about 76,191 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 320i, 328i, 320i xDrive, and 328i xDrive sedans; model year 2014 328i xDrive Sports Wagons; model year 2012-2013 528i and 528i xDrive sedans, model year 2013-2014 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles and model year 2012-2014 Z4 sDrive28i roadsters. Due to insufficient lubrication, the vacuum pump that supplies brake power assistance may fail.
Consequeces:: A failure of the brake vacuum pump results in a reduction in braking power that could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action:: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent insufficient vacuum pump lubrication, free of charge. The safety recall began on January 31, 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

2013 BMW 528I Complaints
On [XXX], Century West BMW in North Hollywood, CA performed recall 20E-A01 B120921 (DME reprogram/connector update) on my 2013 BMW 528i. Within 30 minutes of leaving the dealership, the car displayed a red “engine overheating – stop immediately” warning while I was in a crowded intersection with my child in the vehicle. This created an immediate danger to us and to surrounding traffic. Prior to the recall, the vehicle had no history of overheating. When I returned the next morning ([XXX]), the service advisor admitted they had no timestamp or documentation of the coolant bleed procedure. Instead of proving the recall was performed correctly, the dealership attempted to shift blame onto unrelated issues such as the thermostat or an oil leak, even sending me a video of the oil leak but providing no proof of proper recall completion or verification. This negligence placed me, my child, and the public at serious risk of injury and could have caused catastrophic engine damage. The fact that the vehicle overheated almost immediately after recall work indicates the recall was not properly completed or verified, and the car was returned to me in an unsafe condition. 2014 BMW 320I Complaints
I was driving on a on a busy interstate after work and out of nowhere I get the Temperature warning and start losing power. This is Dangerous! I am submitting this complaint to report a safety-related defect involving the electric water pump on my 2014 BMW 320i. This issue is widely documented among BMW owners, and several 3-Series models from the same production years have been included in recalls or service bulletins for premature water pump failure. However, the 2014 BMW 320i (F30 chassis, N20/N26 engine) is not included, despite experiencing the same failure pattern. In my case, the water pump failed without warning. During the coolant bleeding process, there was no circulation or pump activation, indicating a complete pump malfunction. This is consistent with the known failure mode of BMW’s electric water pumps, which can stop working suddenly and cause rapid engine overheating. Because the pump is electronically controlled, there is often no gradual symptom—only an abrupt loss of coolant flow that can lead to engine damage within minutes. This defect poses a significant safety risk. A sudden water pump failure can cause the vehicle to overheat while driving, potentially resulting in engine shutdown, loss of power, or being stranded in unsafe conditions. I was driving on a 2 hour drive on the country road and all of the sudden I received an engine overheating warning and began experiencing a loss of power. Given that BMW has acknowledged similar failures in other 3-Series models of the same year, it is unclear why the 320i is excluded, despite sharing the same engine family and pump design. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this issue and consider expanding the scope of existing investigations or recalls to include the 2014 BMW 320i. Owners should not be responsible for costly repairs related to a known, widespread defect that affects vehicle safety and reliability.;
2014 BMW 328I Complaints
The contact owned a 2014 BMW 328I. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle stalled after overheating the previous day. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the valvetronic system needed to be replaced; while the vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting repairs, the contact was notified that the vehicle had sustained thermal damage over the weekend, caught fire, and burned completely, leaving only the frame. The vehicle was unoccupied during the fire. A police and fire department report was filed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was later notified that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V608000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). The failure mileage approximately 100,000.;
2014 BMW X1 SAV Complaints
MY VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE ON 12/05/2020. THERE WERE NO KNOWN RECALLS. TOTAL LOSS.... STOPPED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SOUTHBOUND I-95 IN BREVARD COUNTY, FL. BMW OF NORTH AMERICA HAS INDICATED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS SO SEVERE THAT THEY CANNOT FIGURE OUT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE AND WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY LIABILITY!!;
2014 BMW X3 Complaints
Had an oil change through BMW with their pre-packaged oil service. 6 days later my oil pump chain guard broke inside the engine and now they're telling me I need a new engine which cost $33,000. I believe the chain guard was either broken during the time of their possession or they could at least have told me that the chain guard was cracked or broken when they did the oil change by looking down the oil cap. They explained to me looking inside the oil cap is how they know the guard has broken and the chain has stretched. So during the oil change they should have been able to tell me or show me that that was a possibility or it was broken. I received my car back in good health with all green lights checking that the car was in top shade condition and 6 days later the car is totaled.;
