BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, xDrive 50e, 2024 X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, 2024 X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, Alpina XB7, and 2023 XM vehicles. The knee air bag (driver and/or passenger) may not have been manufactured correctly, which can result in the knee air bag not deploying as intended.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 1,981 units affected.

Description:: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, xDrive 50e, 2024 X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, 2024 X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, Alpina XB7, and 2023 XM vehicles. The knee air bag (driver and/or passenger) may not have been manufactured correctly, which can result in the knee air bag not deploying as intended.
Consequeces:: A knee air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury.
Corrective action:: Dealers will replace the knee air bag (driver and/or passenger), free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 6, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2023 BMW XM Complaints
On June 8, 2026, I parked my 2023 BMW XM on my residential driveway, exited the vehicle, and walked toward my residence. My Ring security camera captured the incident. The video shows: I exited the BMW and walked approximately 12 seconds to my front door. I entered my residence. Approximately three seconds later—roughly 15 seconds after I exited—the BMW began rolling. The headlights illuminated as the vehicle began moving. I was already inside my residence and had no physical contact with the vehicle when it began moving. The vehicle subsequently crossed the street, traveled through a bush, and sustained damage. I opened a case with BMW of North America following the incident. BMW conducted an extended investigation that included dealership inspections and review by BMW's National Engineering Group. BMW requested an additional inspection approximately two weeks before providing its determination. After 10 weeks, BMW ultimately advised that it could not identify a vehicle defect or malfunction responsible for the rollaway. BMW identified transmission-related fault codes during its investigation but advised that those codes were not related to or responsible for the rollaway. Following the incident, I attempted to understand how a vehicle would behave at the same location if it had actually been left in Neutral. I separately positioned a BMW X7 and BMW X3 in the same area of the driveway and intentionally placed each vehicle in Neutral. When I released the brake, each vehicle immediately began rolling. This was not a scientific or engineering test, and I am not presenting it as proof of a defect. I conducted the comparison because the XM remained stationary for approximately 15 seconds after I exited before it began moving. The rollaway resulted in substantial damage to the vehicle. Subsequent inspection identified damage including the wheels/tires, rear driver's-side control arm, sensor components, and steering rack. It could have cause physical harm to others.;
2024 BMW X5 Complaints
I am requesting NHTSA assistance regarding a serious and recurring braking safety concern involving our BMW X5. We initially reported braking problems to BMW and brought the vehicle to the dealership for evaluation. We were advised that the vehicle was operating normally. Subsequently, a brake related recall was issued, and the vehicle underwent recall related service. Despite this, braking concerns continued. We again reported the problem and were advised after evaluation that the vehicle was operating properly. There were subsequent incidents involving abnormal braking behavior. During 1 incident, my wife was slowly parking the vehicle when it did not stop as expected despite repeatedly applying the brake pedal. The vehicle continued moving and collided with a wall before eventually stopping. We have also experienced abnormal brake vibration and other concerning braking behavior. Because of these repeated safety concerns, the vehicle is currently the subject of pending lemon law litigation involving BMW North America. Most recently, we returned the vehicle to the BMW dealership because of the braking and safety concerns. The vehicle remained there for approximately 4 months. We have not received a clear explanation of what diagnostic testing, inspection, repair, or corrective work was performed during this extended period. We were then informed that the vehicle was ready for pickup. When we went to retrieve it, it was covered with substantial dust and had very low tire pressure. We were unable to take it home. Our primary concern is safety. We do not know whether the reported braking malfunction was identified or corrected, what was done during approximately 4 months at the dealership, or the technical basis for releasing the vehicle for operation. We regularly transport our young children in this vehicle and are extremely concerned about driving it without knowing whether the braking problem has been properly identified and addressed. 2024 BMW X6 Complaints
The contact owns a 2024 BMW X6. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V104000(Electronic Stability Control(ESC), Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.;
2024 BMW X7 Complaints
I was told this car has rear cross traffic warning when I ordered it from our local BMW dealer. After several "close calls" in parking lots, I took it into the dealer because it doesn't work like any of our other vehicles (Mercedes). I was told by the dealer that you have to be actively backing up and the car has to be immediately behind you in a very close proximity to the car before it will even alert you. There doesn't seem any active braking either. When you do a search on this issue with BMW's, it is a very common complaint of BMW owners. I believe this is a major safety issue with the feature that BMW claims.;
