General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra HD 2500, 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The tailgate's electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in Park.

The recall was influenced by the manufacturer with about 131,231 units affected.

Description:: General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra HD 2500, 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The tailgate's electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in Park.
Consequeces:: An unlatched tailgate may open and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective action:: Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 17, 2024. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N242469160. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA Recall 24V-060.

2024 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 Complaints
The contact's husband owned a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 54 MPH, the steering wheel jerked to the left and sent the vehicle over onto the opposite side of the road, where the vehicle struck a steel electric pole. The contact stated that the two front and two side air bags deployed. The Police Department, Sheriff's Office, and the Fire Department were called, and the firemen used the jaws of life to extract the contact's husband from the vehicle. A Police report was filed. Medical attention was needed, and the contact's husband was taken by ambulance and then airlifted to a hospital. The contact's husband sustained a compound fracture to the left forearm, a fractured pelvic bone, fractures to the C5, C6, and C7 in the neck, a fractured first rib, a spine injury, and a left knee injury. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the vehicle was deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 18,400.;
2024 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500 Complaints
The infotainment/control module in my 2024 Silverado 3500HD failed unexpectedly while I was traveling cross-country. The module is available for inspection upon request. Prior to the failure, I did not receive any warning lamps or messages. When the system failed, I lost access to multiple camera systems integrated into the vehicle, including backup and visibility-assistance cameras used to aid lane changes, parking, maneuvering, and identifying obstacles around the truck. Due to the size and height of this vehicle, these cameras provide important visibility of areas that are difficult to observe directly, including pedestrians, cyclists, and children who may be below the driver's line of sight. The loss of these camera systems reduced situational awareness and increased the risk of a collision while backing, changing lanes, or operating the vehicle in crowded areas. The failure also disabled navigation, hands-free functions, audio, WiFi connectivity, and access to vehicle settings controlled through the infotainment system. The vehicle was inspected by a Chevrolet dealer in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The dealer attempted a software reflash to correct the issue; however, the procedure rendered the unit completely inoperable. The dealer confirmed that the module required replacement and quoted an estimated repair cost of approximately $1,500. The required replacement part was unavailable, and despite contacting numerous Chevrolet dealerships, I was unable to obtain a repair during my trip. As a result, I was required to continue operating the vehicle while towing a large trailer for an extended period without the camera systems and related functionality. I have also become aware of GM Service Bulletin PIC6630B, which indicates that GM has identified this failure mode and that it is not an isolated occurrence. Given that a single module failure can disable multiple safety features, I request that it be evaluated by an independent authority accordingly.;
2024 GMC SIERRA 2500 Complaints
While driving my truck on the highway at 65 mph the truck bucked hard and immediately downshifted into 2nd gear. This caused me to rapidly decelerate to approximately 40 mph, I am lucky there was not another vehicle behind me when this happened since rapid unexpected deceleration without brake lights is very dangerous. I had to drive the truck in limp mode at 45mph and approximately 4500 rpms to the nearest exit. This event illuminated the trucks check engine light and displayed a brief service 4WD message followed by a permanent reduced acceleration message on the dash.;
2024 GMC SIERRA 3500 Complaints
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 3500. The contact stated that the tailgate frequently opened independently while the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V060000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages); however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by a dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 40,600.;
