2017 FORD F-150- Chesterfield, VA
At 87,336 miles, my 2017 Ford F-150 (3.5L EcoBoost) would not start. The engine clicked and buzzed but failed to turn over, leaving me stranded with no warning. There was no prior check engine light. I brought the truck to Roy Hendrick Automotive in [XXX] (Invoice XXX, completed 03/05/2025). Their diagnosis determined the cam phasers and timing components had failed. The shop performed a full timing chain and cam phaser replacement, including both camshaft sprockets, timing chains, tensioners, timing chain guides, variable timing solenoids, water pump, seals, gaskets, and spark plugs. Total cost: $5,449.36, entirely out of pocket. This is a serious safety defect. Cam phaser failure in the 3.5L EcoBoost can cause catastrophic loss of engine timing, resulting in sudden engine stall or failure to start. A stall at highway speed, in an intersection, or while merging creates an immediate risk of collision, serious injury, or death. Even a no-start condition is a safety issue when it strands a driver in an unsafe location. I use this vehicle daily to transport my two young children (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) to and from daycare. A sudden engine failure while driving with them in the vehicle could have had fatal consequences. Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost cam phaser failures are extensively documented, with numerous TSBs and owner complaints on file. An engine should not require over $5,000 in internal timing repairs before 100,000 miles. Ford has failed to issue a recall or provide an adequate remedy. I am filing this complaint to ensure NHTSA has a complete record of another 3.5L EcoBoost timing failure that put vehicle occupants, including small children, at risk. 2017 FORD F-150- Chesterfield, VA
At 90,181 miles, the 10R80 transmission in my 2017 Ford F-150 suffered a catastrophic internal failure. The vehicle exhibited violent, hard shifts between gears 2 through 4 with no check engine light or warning indicator, giving zero warning the drivetrain was failing. Sheehy Ford in [XXX] reproduced the condition. Their diagnosis on RO XXX: "HARSH 4-6 SHIFT-INTERNAL FAULT." Teardown revealed a fractured CDF drum with metal debris that migrated into the valve body. The dealer removed the transmission and performed a full overhaul, replacing the CDF drum, clutch cylinder, forward clutches, and valve body, and flushed the cooler and converter. Total cost: $6,846.30, entirely out of pocket. This is a serious safety defect. A fractured CDF drum can cause sudden loss of gear engagement, unexpected downshifts, or transmission lockup at highway speed, any of which can result in loss of vehicle control and severe risk of injury or death. I use this vehicle daily to transport my two young children (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) to and from daycare. This defect endangered their lives, my life, and other motorists, all with no diagnostic warning. This failure is consistent with widespread defects in Ford's 10R80 transmission, currently the subject of class-action litigation. A transmission should not need a $7,000 overhaul before 100,000 miles. Ford is aware of this pattern and has failed to recall. I am filing to ensure NHTSA has a complete record of another 10R80 failure that directly endangered occupants, including small children. 2017 FORD F-150- Virginia Beach, VA
The vehicle experienced a sudden and violent downshift while driving, causing a severe jolt to the drivetrain. Following this incident, the transmission entered a 'Limp Mode' and remained stuck in 2nd gear, refusing to upshift to any higher gears. This made it impossible to maintain normal traffic speeds, creating a significant safety hazard on public roads. The vehicle is now effectively inoperable. A Ford dealer and Ford Corporate (Case on file) have confirmed this is related to Recall 26V237, but they stated that a software remedy will not be available until July 2026. This delay for an actively failed vehicle is unreasonable and poses a continuous safety risk.

The vehicle gets stuck in gear or "limp mode" and will then suddenly fix itself and switch into the correct gear intermittently. There is often a delay when the vehicle goes into limp mode and the service engine wrench light coming on, so you don't know it's happened until you lose the ability to accelerate. I was almost t-boned when this issue first appeared as I did not realize the vehicle was stuck in 4th gear. I was at a flashing yellow light waiting to turn left across traffic. When I saw a gap in the oncoming traffic I proceeded to make my turn only to realize the vehicle had very little acceleration. Because it was stuck in 4th gear it had virtually no acceleration from a stop. Thankfully the oncoming vehicles were paying attention and noticed my vehicle crawling through the turn otherwise I would have been hit. It also can get stuck in lower gears and not shift up, so when accelerating to get onto the highway it will remain stuck in 1st or 2nd gear and as a result drive very poorly at highway speeds. I brought this to a Ford dealership and they had the truck for 3 weeks and told me they couldn't reproduce it and bring it back to them when it was more consistent since it is a very intermittent issue. Even though I showed them my Ford app with over 100+ notifications that stated the issue and they were able to see the vehicle codes they told me there was nothing they could do. I took it to another dealer and their recommendations were: Replacement of Trans Internal Wiring Harness (Molded Leadframe) & Pan Gasket & Filter, Transmission Flush The many notifications in the Ford app that I presented to the dealerships stated: "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power - The transmission control module has detected that one of the transmission sensors is not sending its information to the module. Bring to authorized dealer as soon as possible" This issue has manifested itself many times for me and I have been going back and forth with Ford about it for months.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 50 MPH on the highway, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to second gear. The wrench warning light illuminated while the vehicle shifted uncontrollably between 4th and 1st gear. The driver pulled over, turned off and restarted the vehicle. Shortly after resuming normal driving and then stopping at a traffic light, the transmission was in 3rd gear while the speedometer displayed 0 MPH. The dealer was notified of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train). The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

Multiple issues with vehicle transmission. Sometimes will not shift out of 1st gear even after the vehicle has been in operation (restarting at stoplight after 10 min of driving). While driving, transmission starts intermittently revving on its own, error shown on dash but check engine light stays off. Vehicle will then only downshift to 3rd gear even when stopped. This is remedied when vehicle is shut off at stoplight and turned back on. Three times while driving at 50+MPH, vehicle will suddenly downshift to 2nd gear and wheels have locked up. While driving, transmission starts intermittently revving on its own, error shown on dash but and yellow check engine light comes on. Code reader plugged in and no code shown, check engine light comes off. Vehicle will then only downshift to 3rd gear even when stopped. This is remedied when vehicle is shut off at stoplight and turned back on.

Attempted to have my local Ford dealership, Sam Galloway Ford, Ft. Myers, schedule the recall on 4/14. Was told they parts are on a back order. Contacted FORD Corp. via chat with AI, then an agent asking in the Brake Master Cylinder replacement parts were on a national backorder. I was told no and they requested the name of the dealership. Pressed the dealership for an appointment. This was granted 4/23, 7:30am EST. Arrived and was checked in. At 10am was told they do not have the parts. A supervisor explained that on Monday they had to return 32 parts packages to FORD because these were defective. Contacted FORD again, they denied that the replacement parts are defective. Who is one to believe at this point?

Cruising at 50 mph in 7th gear and the truck randomly down shifted to 2nd causing a rapid brake action and was almost rear ended. Now the transmission will not shift properly.
