GRAND DESIGN Complaints

Having symptoms of frame failure, excessive king pin movement when hooking and unhooking the trailer from the tow vehicle. My main concern is a complete failure of the frame allowing the trailer to separate from the tow vehicle while traveling down the road and endangering my family as well as other motorist.

I had noticed the Pin Box flexing, especially over bumps or any rough road or bridge approach. As it got worse I could tell we a lot of flex in the frame area where the Pin Box is located. I contacted the dealer and they examined our RV and determined the frame was flexing due to the bolts connecting the chassis to the actual frame of the RV body being to small and working loose/broke. The dealer replaced the bolts with larger bolts and advised the flex is now within specifications. It is better but it's not great by any means. I'm concerned as the RV gets older the condition will get worse and could even become hazardous. This condition has already affected the value of the RV and when it's out of warranty I'll have no recourse other than to fix it myself.

The contact owns a 2024 Grand Design Imagine. The contact stated that while removing the spare tire secured under the RV, the contact noticed that the spare tire crank assembly wire attaching the spare tire to the RV had frayed. The contact was concerned that the frayed wire could cause the spare tire to detach while driving. The RV was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.

11/15/2023: Kitchen slide of the RV partially opened while traveling down the road. My husband does have video of this occurring as we have a camera system installed on our RV. 6/25/2024: Kitchen slide of RV "raised up" and landed on an island drawer pull while traveling down the road. The slide could not be "lifted off" of the drawer pull and we were forced to activate the slide and allow it to travel out, causing damage to the drawer pull and drawer rails.

Back door of RV came opened while driving down the road. The door is always locked (dead bolt included) and the entry-assist arm folded over the door during travel. Upon parking for the evening, it was noted that the back door of the RV had popped open during travel.

The main and nautilus doors to the camper will not stay closed during travel. This usually happens with 10 miles or less and I have to stop to close them.

In September 2023, we purchased our 2024 Grand Design Imagine AIM RB travel trailer. We started receiving trailer brake warnings on our truck immediately after purchasing the camper and brought it back to the dealership. The service technicians assured us that there were no issues with the brakes. In January 2024, the brakes locked up and started burning while we were driving on [XXX] in the Phoenix metro area. We had the camper towed to an authorized service dealer in Surprise, AZ, where the brakes were replaced and a switch was installed to prevent the solar panels from overloading the battery. The brakes continued to be an issue despite being sent on our way with assurances that the brakes were working. While traveling, we realized that our brakes were not functioning and were cold to the touch even after using them during travel. In February, we heard loud, metallic clanking from the right side of the brakes and returned to a dealership in Tucson, Arizona, for repair . The service manager shared that the right brake was burned up and pieces had broken off inside the drum. They replaced the brakes so that we could safely move on. Traveling from Tucson, Arizona, to Albuquerque, New Mexico, we again discovered that the right side brake was not functioning so we found a storage facility and put the trailer into storage so we could travel safely. We again contacted Grand Design and schedule service for the brakes for May 2024. Again, the service department replaced the brakes and assured us that the issue was resolved. It was not. Traveling from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to our home in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, we found that the brakes on the right side of the trailer were not working and were cold to the touch. Travelling without functioning brakes represents a serious risk to our safety as well as the safety of other travelers. We still have no resolution from Grand Design. The RV has significant frame failure that Grand Design (the manufacturer) is ignoring. I noticed my floors warping and a cabinet crack. There was also some cracking of the fiberglass. I asked the dealership to check it out. The found that the frame is warped, multiple lagbolts are missing and several welds have popped. The RV is unsafe and not road worthy. Grand Design is aware of this issue and has yet to issue a recall or notify owners of the significant structural defect they caused by undersizing the frame and using the wrong lagbolts.

For the safety of others I would like to report a potential issue with 2023 Grand Design Momentum 5th wheel trailer where the wheel will separate from the axle. This happened recently on September 15th @ 1:30pm while heading west bound on 1-80 just east of Sidney, NE. We heard a clunk, thinking it was a blowout I checked the rear view mirror only see the tire (drivers side rear) rolling away from the vehicle. We immediately pulled over to the side of the interstate and further inspection found the disc rotor hub/spindle missing from the ale. My understanding is this can only occur if the castle nut that holds the hub on the axle is missing. Further, the castle nut is locked in place by a cotter pin. Both the castle nut and cotter pin were missing. I found some parts remnants by the side of the road. (disc brake pad, broken rotor, brake caliper piston) While investigating the issue further in an attempt to understand what happened, I ran across a recall for a very similar issue NHTSA 23V-455 Curt Axle Grease Zerk.

All tires failed. 225/75 R15 Took my tires in for a routine rotation and balance cracks were on the tires. Dry rot
