2008 MERCURY MARINER Complaints

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while stopped at a stop sign, the steering wheel inadvertently moved to the right or left. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed with steering control module failure. The steering control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 133,000.

Power steering goes out at regular intervals. in the same type of issue as the following Recall notice 14S05/NHTSA Or the Electric assist system as bad.

The steering wheel locked up while turning at about 20 MPH. There were not any warning lights that illuminated before, during, or after the incident. This happened on two separate occasions spanning about 7 or 8 months apart. I was fortunate enough to have safely pulled off into the shoulder of the road on both occasions. I turned the vehicle off for about 2-3 minutes and started it back up and the power assisted steering worked again. If I was unable to pull off into the shoulder, it could have resulted in an accident involving another vehicle.

While driving on the highway my car just cut off in the middle lane. I was able to get into the emergency lane.

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, the steering wheel suddenly became very difficult to turn in either direction and the message "Power Steering Fault" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 168,000.

Power steering went out while driving on the interstate. It will not engage at all.

Car was accelerating from stop to about 15 mph up a slight incline when the engine shut off and “Stop Safely Now” appeared on the dashboard. At the same time ?? This symbol lit up on the dashboard as well. I came to a stop, shut the car off and tried to start it. On the third attempt it started normally.

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, he heard abnormal sounds coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated he lost control of the steering wheel and the vehicle was shuddering. The ABS warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact stated as he drove, the vehicle continued to shudder. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic who diagnosed the failure as a loss of the steering torque sensor signal. The contact stated that the vehicle was not repaired, and the failure had been reoccurring while driving at various speeds. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering) because the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 155,000.

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the electric power steering failed, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to his residence. The contact had his friend who is an independent mechanic diagnose the vehicle. The mechanic determined that the power steering sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

I lost all braking ability and the pedal goes to the floor. This is a Mercury Mariner Hybrid and Ford Escape Hybrid issue, it doesn't affect the non-hybrid models. Ford knows about this as there are hundreds and hundreds of complaints online about it and it's a $5000+ fix. I have not been able to drive my Mariner Hybrid since 2018.
