Check engine, ABS, and traction control indicator lights have come on and gone off intermittently, even though the car has received routine services, as indicated -- though prior to that, for many months, the tire pressure indicator light would come on and go off intermittently. As I drove about 25 to 30 mph, the above mentioned control lights came on as I came to a stop, followed by the power steering indicator light (for the first time). Immediately, there was loss of power steering control. With great difficulty, I drove the car about 3 blocks and attempted to park. It took about 15 minutes to parallel park in a large space, with great difficulty. I turned off the engine and let the car sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, then restarted the car, which then seemed to be fine (at least drivable) -- though the check engine and traction control lights remained on. (Still, I was afraid to drive -- thinking the power steering could go out at any time, knowing it could easily result in no control of the car, grave danger, and serious accident. Anyway, with trepidation, I drove the car back home, where it has sat since. I find the host of this car's repairs troublesome and expensive. As for the loss of power steering -- I find this unconscionable.

2003 SATURN ION, CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO BROKEN TIMING CHAIN. THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE, NEARLY CAUSING A CRASH IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION.

The contact stated that as her husband turned off and restarted the vehicle, the vehicle regained power steering functionality. The contact's husband was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while her daughter was driving the vehicle. An unknown warning message was displayed. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering). The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.

Wife reported power steering went out while in city traffic and she was not able to execute right hand turn. She had to gradually approach side of road, park, turned car off, turned on, jiggled steering wheel and assisted steering returned. She says at least one dashboard lit up, but doesn't remember which one.

I've lost power steering THREE times now. Once on the highway while changing lanes. Once while trying to pull into a parking spot, and the final time while pulling into my drive way.

My gas tank is leaking a good amount of gas and is dripping all over my exhaust. Major fire risk and also my wiring has been all messed up. When my brights are on, my speakers make an unbearable screaming noise and I saw that this was an issue for many saturn ion users. There was a recall on this car for the same gas tank/pump issue years ago. Can I get this issue fixed free of charge or has the recall expired?
