2023 VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 Complaints

The contact owned a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH and making a right turn, the door opened unexpectedly. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V651000 (STRUCTURE); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, the manufacturer was unable to confirm when parts would be available for the recall repair. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

I was arriving for an appointment and preparing to parallel park on the street. I was parking on a street in front of the office building, which is located on a corner. I observed the second and third vehicles parked from the corner were preparing to depart. I moved my vehicle slightly to the shoulder and activated my blinker to wait for the vehicles to leave. I idled next to the car parked at the corner to allow room for the departing vehicles to exit and for myself to pull in. Both vehicles pulled out of their parking spaces and into the street. I then proceeded to accelerate to pull into a parking spot. As two spots had opened, it was large enough for me to pull in forward without needing to parallel park by backing in. As I started to pull in, the vehicle’s automatic emergency braking system malfunctioned and erroneously engaged the brakes with violent force. An alarm sounded in the vehicle, a red warning flashed on the screen, and I was launched violently forward in my seat. The force with which the vehicle stopped made it seem as though I had hit something hard, like a wall. I quickly put the vehicle in park -- only halfway pulled into the parking spot -- and exited the vehicle to survey the situation. After circling the vehicle, it was clear that nothing had been hit and there were no obstructions in the road whatsoever. I returned to the driver’s seat and resumed parking. After pulling into the space, I put the vehicle into reverse to straighten out. Again, the vehicle’s braking system engaged without reason, though this time less violently and without the sound alarm and red warning. After parking, I exited the vehicle and took photographs of the area to document that there were no obstructions or anything else in the environment that would cause the system to believe there was an obstruction. Due to the malfunction, I sustained injuries consistent with whiplash -- pain, tightness, and inflammation along the left side of my neck and left shoulder.

I left my office at about [XXX] on [XXX] Thursday for home, traffic was moderate, approaching the long weekend. I reached home at 5:29 pm, opened the garage and started parking the vehicle inside the car. All of a sudden, the car just took off and randomly accelerated and the next thing I found was that the vehicle landed and stopped right inside the house on the small island by the garage entrance, which is about 9” higher than garage floor, into the house with the front metal door and right side of the wall and bathroom door all shattered in front! On my left, I saw my wife in (by kitchen stove) in total panic and my [XXX] mother- in- law shouting to my wife. “What happened?!”, and my [XXX] grandson crying and closing his ears from the loud sound! Instinctively, as I realized I would not be able to exit the vehicle from where it was lodged, I reversed the vehicle back into garage where I could come out. As I switched into reverse gear (which this vehicle requires you to press the brake to be able to switch from drive to reverse), the vehicle again just accelerated with force. This time, damaging the garbage can in the garage, left garage door vertical track, drywall and outside brick wall, as the brakes were not engaging. If I had not steered my car right or left, I would have landed in the living room of the house across the street. Therefore, I steered to the right to remain on the street (in hindsight, this may not have been the best choice – in case there was another vehicle or resident walking on the street). As my vehicle was in reverse, going towards the street perpendicular to mine, it knocked down the street sign pole onto my property, ran over the curb, grass, and landscaping stones on my lawn. Finally, the vehicle stopped two feet away from my living room window and 3-4 feet above street level, under a tree on my front lawn, crashing against a big landscaping rock. This vehicle has continual electronic issues. Aside from the 2 (as of now) recalls that are out on it- with no repair available- the functionality of this car is completely undependable. The computer screen (which controls almost every function of the car) often shuts off in the middle of operating (e.g. driving on a highway) and the only way to "fix" it is to shut the car off. Not ideal. Of course, this issue is intermittent so when i brought to VW they were unable to replicate.

I'm almost a year in a lease for this car. Made an appointment to take it in for the first service and then by word of mouth found out about the recalls, called to make sure they'd be able to fix the recalls and was told they would not be able to and so it was decided we'd wait to take it in for service when the fixes were available. That was on 9/6/2024. After searching my VIN with NHTSA - and only after that did I receive a recall notice and that is only for the door handles. I tried to contact VW per the instructions on the recall notice but contacting them via their website didn't work and the phone hold time was over an hour. I have experienced the software issue where everything goes blank including my speedometer and resets minutes later. We did go to a dealership and some of the conversation was that they can't sell the ID4 right now because of the recalls and the car is unsafe - Yet I am driving this car as my only mode of transportation.

Hello, our vehicle doors frequently unlock on their own and there have also been times while we are in the vehicle where we try to unlock the doors and they won’t unlock. I am worried about getting locked in the car, or having the doors open while driving. The windows also have automatically all rolled down with no one engaging with the vehicle. There is a concern for the safety of the belongings in the car. And I’m now generally worried about other electrical malfunctions. We have brought these issues to our VW dealer twice and they cannot reproduce them or fix them. There are no warning lights for these issues. I know there are new recalls for this vehicle, but VW has no estimated time as to when they will be ready. I feel very unsafe in this vehicle.

The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the instrument panel went blank and continued flickering independently and the rear-view image failed to display properly while the transmission was shifted into reverse. The vehicle was taken to a dealer January and September of 2024 but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact had received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (STRUCTURE) and 24V344000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The failure mileage was 11,000. VIN too confirms parts not available.

There has been no update regarding the open recalls on the ID4 from Volkswagen. The 919A/24V344 recall is over 5 months old with no update from Volkswagen and the 57J9/24V651 recall for the door handles has no update from Volkswagen at all.

The dash is blank and white in color, no speedometer or information necessary to drive the vehicle. Doors do not unlock or lock.

My cars backup cameras have never worked properly and the dealer keeps changing me $485.00 to run a complete diagnostic every time I take it in. My car will erratically pulled to the right for no reason and caused the right front tire to blow forcing me to have it towed to the dealer and they had to replace both front tires which cost me $900.00 to replace. The car locked up the brakes and turned it to the right causing me to sever my left outer thumb which has cost me over $700.00 so far and is going to require me to have 4+ hours of surgery on my thumb by a surgeon and they haven't given me the cost of the surgery yet but it is estimated at over $7,000.00 and I am left handed and doesn't allow me to use that hand to hold the steering wheel or anything else.
