  • CURT ECHO TRAILER BRAKE CONTRO
    - Poplar Bluff, MO

This brake controller seems to apply full brakes regardless of the settings within the app. I have reinstalled it several times as directed by the manufacturere and each time I get on the road and just barely touch the brakes it locks the trailer brakes. This is dangerous since there is no way to test the system without driving.

Curt MFG. knowingly sold this product after they under engineered the connection points to adequately distribute the forces while in use (trailering) whereby the vehicle(S) (2020 Subaru Outback new model design chassis) in this case develop stress cracks in the frame and associated components due to the lack of even load distribution. This Trailer hitch fits many other Subaru models and years as they mostly share a common Chassis. I am guessing they have many of these in the field at this time. Curt re-engineered the product a period of time later after receiving customer complaints to include additional attachments points to the vehicle frame but continues to leave there defective product in the field w/o any attempt in which to RECALL the defective engineering associated with the aforementioned Hitch number 13437 No notices were ever given to customers about the potential damage to their vehicles the can cause. Currently this hitch is listed as DISCONTINUED The new re-engineered replacement hitch is number 13494 I contacted several representatives from Curt Manufacturing and was told they would not provide a replacement either under their Lifetime Warranty or as a offer of good faith on their part so I can utilize the product I bought in accordance with the proper limitation(s) and not have to worry about my vehicle being damaged. One Curt supervisor Mr. Mark, told me that I would have to document and present my case on what is a known problem and they may or may not decide to do anything about it. I don't have the resources to hire an Attorney and otherwise document my case on what is known to them to be a defective product. I am sure as time goes on and the damage increases they will continue to kick the can down the road in order to save money and compromise any integrity they may have once. I feel Curt Mfg. has shown poor customer service by putting property at risk and potentially their customers by allowing this product to stay out in the field.

  • CURT ECHO TRAILER BRAKE CONTRO
    - Portland, OR

Trailer Brake Controller worked fine out of the box, then the 3rd time we used it the controller would apply the trailer brakes abruptly and violently even on the lowest of settings, causing the trailer to skid or bring the vehicle and trailer to an overly abrupt stop at slower speeds, increasing the likelihood of rear end collisions by those travelling behind us. The Manufacturer only offered to replace the unit, not refund, and wouldn't admit there was a problem with many of the units even though a quick search of this Trailer Brake Controller on several RV message boards reports many similar occurrences and some reporting it applies the brakes without input from the driver

CURT 23518 BLACK TRAILER HITCH LOCK FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. I LOST MY HITCH (WITH NO TRAILER) AS I WAS DRIVING MY 2020 JEEP GLADIATOR. THE LOCK FAILED AND THE PIN CAME OUT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR MAJOR DAMAGE, ONLY DAMAGE WAS A SCRATCHED HITCH. IN PRIOR USE OF THE LOCKING PIN, I HAD TROUBLE ENGAGING THE LOCK. I ALSO FOUND THE LOCK TO DISENGAGE VERY EASILY. THERE IS ALSO NO FEEDBACK MECHANISM TO KNOW WHETHER OR NOT THE LOCK IS ENGAGED BESIDES PULLING ON THE END (NO AUDIBLE CLICK OR FEELING). PULLING ON THE LOCK IS SOMETIMES NOT EFFECTIVE AS IT MAY BE DONE AT AN ANGLE, IN WHICH CASE THE LOCK CAN APPEAR LOCKED EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT LOCKED OR PARTIALLY LOCKED. ISSUES WITH THE LOCK ARE EXPRESSED IN SOME OF THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ON AMAZON. PLEASE CHECK THOSE FOR PICTURES OF THE ISSUE. IT'S ONLY A FEW CASES BUT MIGHT HAVE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES FOR SOMEONE AS AN ENTIRE TRAILER CAN BECOME LOOSE DUE TO THE BAD DESIGN. I CONTACTED CURT SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE ISSUE. THEY CHECKED THEIR INTERNAL DATABASE AND DETERMINED THERE THE ISSUE WON'T BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER. THIS WAS DISAPPOINTING AND SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS. I CONTACTED CURT AND SPOKE TO A REPRESENTATIVE WHO SAID THEIR SYSTEMS

A SIMPLE HAND PULL REMOVED THE PINS COMPLETELY. I WAS PULLING 39' HEAVY LOAD THAT ALL BUT CAME LOOSE FROM THE TOW VEHICLE. NOTE: NONE OF THE COMPONENTS WERE BENT OR BROKEN. IT IS A BAD DESIGN, AND SOMEONE CAN GET KILLED FROM THIS. *DT*JB*DT*TR

CURT MODEL 63015 PINTLE HOOK RATED FOR A 30,000 POUND TRAILER, MADE BY CURT MFG, 6208 INDUSTRIAL DRIVE, EAU CLAIRE, WI 54701. THIS ITEM IS SUPPOSED TO COME WITH GRADE 8 MOUNTING HARDWARE. THE BOLTS SUPPLIED BY CURT WERE INDEED 1/2" SAE GRADE 8, BUT THE NUTS WERE NOT GRADE 8 AND WERE A METRIC SPEC - RESULTING IN A LOOSE FIT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DANGEROUSLY WEAK. WHEN MY RETAILER CONTACTED CURT FOR ASSISTANCE, MY RETAILER WAS TOLD TO USE A METRIC SOCKET AND EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE. THE OUT-OF-SPEC NUTS ARE A HAZARD TO THE MOTORING PUBLIC. I PURCHASED MY OWN GRADE 8 HARDWARE TO AVOID THIS DANGER.

I HAVE A 2001 DODGE DAKOTA. WHEN NEW, I INSTALLED A CURT MANUFACTURING TOW HITCH. I TAKE GREAT CARE OF MY VEHICLES. I TOW ONLY ON RARE OCCASIONS, PROBABLY 6-10 DAYS A YEAR. RECENTLY, I NOTICED EXTREME CORROSION ON THE SIDE SUPPORTS AND MAIN TUBE OF THE TOW HITCH. I HAVE NO OTHER CORROSION OF THIS SORT ON MY VEHICLE. THE SIDES SEEM TO BE CORRODING IN SHEETS (STEEL) AS IF IT WAS A PLYWOOD. IT IS TOTALLY UNSAFE TO TOW ANYTHING WHILE IT IS IN THIS CONDITION. IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. CURT HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTEE. I CONTACTED THEM AND SENT PICTURES. I BELIEVE IT MAY BE INFERIOR STEEL OR COATING FROM FACTORY. ANYWAYS, THEY DENIED MY CLAIM. I WANTED A REPLACEMENT. I HAVE ORIGINAL RECEIPT AND INSTRUCTIONS. I AM CONCERNED THAT OTHERS MY HAVE THIS, AND IF NOT ADDRESSED COULD LEAD TO A CATASTROPHIC TOWING ACCIDENT AS EVERYTHING TOWED CONNECTS ONLY TO THIS ACCESSORY. *TR
