COOPER CS5 GRAND TOURING TIRES Complaints

My Ford Escape was fitted with two Cooper tires (235/55 R 17) that had to be replaced with less than 20k miles on them. After using the tires in normal city/highway situations, both tires started to bulge causing vibration when driving the vehicle. This was due to the belts breaking within the tire. While this specific tire is not currently under recall, I believe it should be. There is no reason these tires should've worn out so quickly and it sounds like the exact same issue many of their other tires currently under recall have. They are well under their warranty of 80k miles, but I will not put another Cooper tire on my car. I've only included the TIN from one tire, because I do not have the TIN for the first one that bulged. It has already been removed and disposed of. This happened to both of my Coopers in each rear position of my car.

The contact owns a 2012 Honda Odyssey equipped with Cooper Tires, Tire Line: CS5 Grand Touring, Tire Size: P235/65/R17, DOT Number: (N/A). The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle started to vibrate abnormally. The driver was able to pull over safely and became aware of a blowout of the front passenger’s side tire. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, there was an abnormal vibration in the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to a tire center where it was determined that the failure was linked to a busted tire core. The damaged tire and driver's side rear tire were replaced. The contact stated that while continuing to drive, the steering wheel and the vehicle continued to vibrate. The vehicle was taken to a tire center, where it was determined that the driver's side front tire had a shifted radial belt, and a bulge was detected. The tire was replaced. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 79,694. The tire mileage was approximately 20,000.

Separation between belts near the sidewall Cooper cs5 grand touring 205/65 r16. I have had 4 tires that this has happened to. Replaced both front tires twice. This seems to be a recurring problem with these tires.

Right front Cooper GS5 Grand Touring 205/70 R15 96T with only 862 miles on it had a complete air loss/went completely flat when car was turning into a parking lot. This is one of a set of brand new tires on the car. The car was never driven on a highway after these were purchased. Only local driving at 45 to 50 MPH max. Tire was taken to a tire shop in hopes of getting it plugged/repaired. They found nothing had penetrated the tire. They could not pressurize the tire. Air was blowing out all around the outside bead and could not be seated. They put lubricant around the bead inside and out and gave it some rapid shots of air on the machine. It started to hold pressure but immediately had a roughly 4 inch section of the sidewall start to balloon out. Technician said he was afraid it was going to blow up in his face. He chalk marked the defective area on the tire and said the bead and sidewall had failed in that ballooning area and the tire was defective and not repairable.

July 2020, we purchased 4 Cooper Tires, size is 225/65 R17 102T. These tires are 80,000-mile tires. Vehicle was taken into Discount Tire due to heavy vibration when driving on June 13, 2022. The tires had 13,663 miles on them. A tire was found to be separated. Discount Tire changed it out with a new tire. On Aug 10, 2022, the vehicle was taken into Discount Tire again due to heavy vibration in the vehicle while driving. A 2nd tire was found to be separated, and a 3rd tire has a flat spot in it. These tires now have 15,714 miles on them. Again, changed out the separated tire with a new tire. Do not have the DOT information on the 2 separated tires. Discount Tire disposed of the 2 separated tires each time they serviced the vehicle. The tire with the flat spot is still on the vehicle. There are 2 original tires on my vehicle from the July 2020 purchase. These 2 remaining tires pose potential for a blowout and an accident. DOT number U92Y 1CW 4919 & R72Y 1CW 2322. I contacted Cooper Tire, manufacturer, via email 8-16-2022. Received a standard minimal response 8-17-2022. Sent a certified letter 8-17-2022, requesting further assistance. Received another email response stating, "Have your dealer inspect the tires and if he determines that the tires failed due to a workmanship or materials condition, he can process the warranty and get the tires replaced." Tire size: 255/45 R 19 This is actually about all four of my tires. I bought my tires at a discount tire in Bloomingdale, Il shop on 12/14/19. Had 52,524 documented miles. First my tires kept loosing air. maybe had to fill them one every 2-3 weeks, by 2020, it was every 10 days or so. Since 2021 it was up to 2-4 times a week. Took my car to a different tire shop today (12/3/2021) with 67,116 miles and was told the treads were pretty good but my side walls were coming apart. Was told the tires were dangerous to ride on and have pictures of the cracks on the tires.

Two tires on our car developed the same problem two weeks apart: a large bulge in the sidewall near the rim. On 10/5/21 we noticed a bulge on the rear driver’s side tire which looked like a tennis ball was emerging. We took it to our mechanic here in Ohio. He said not to drive on it and replaced the tire. It had less than 13,000 miles on it and I thought it should be covered under warranty. We were told the bulge was due to “road hazard” and so wasn’t covered. They said a chuckhole could do this. We have no recollection of anything like that. And a chuckhole would usually affect the front tire, not the rear. Moreover, the mechanic looked at the rim and said it was not dented. So they suggested I contact Cooper Tire. I paid for the tire and called Cooper. They had me bring the tire to a different shop for evaluation, recommending a Conrad’s Tire nearby. I took it there and the mechanic called Cooper and told them he saw no evidence of road hazard. Cooper then asked me to send the tire to them. Two weeks later we were in Connecticut and heard a low sound from the tires. We took the car to a local shop 10/19/21 where the mechanic showed us a bulge in the sidewall of the front passenger's side tire near the rim that looked exactly the same as the prior defect albeit somewhat smaller, maybe golf ball size. He said it was dangerous to drive on it and he replaced it. I have a photograph of the second tire but unfortunately not the first. Except for the noise the second tire made, there was no noise or warning light or other symptom to alert us to either problem. I sent both tires to Cooper by UPS on their dime three weeks ago and have not heard back. Tire size: M&S 225/60R17 Both tires are DOT U941 1CW 4619 C07R Both were purchased 5/19/20 Thank you in advance for looking into this. I still have two tires on our car purchased at the same time as the two that failed. If there is truly a defect ,either could fail suddenly at any time. Thank you.

IN REGARDS TO COOPER TIRES THE MANUFACTURER INFO AND DOT NUMBER TO FOLLOW. I HAVE HAD TWO TIRES WITH FAILURE TO THE RADIAL BELT. ON 8/4/19 I WAS ON MY WAY TO FT. WORTH TEXAS WHEN I THE FRONT LEFT TIRE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE STARTED THUMPING. I WAS ON HWY 10 IN EAST TEXAS NEAR CANTON AND IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE THERE WAS NO WHERE TO PULL OVER SO I CONTINUED DRIVING SLOWLY WHICH WAS VERY STRESSFUL. THE TIRE DID BLOW BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF AT A REST AREA (THANK YOU JESUS). I CALLED AAA AND THEY SENT A FAMILY OWNED TOW TRUCK SERVICE OUT. THE MAN SAID I HAD A BULGE IN THE WHAT REMAINED AND TOWED MY VAN TO A WALMART 13 MILES AWAY IN CANTON, I OWED HIM AT THAT POINT $27 OUT OF POCKET FOR THE TOW. HE THEN DROVE ME TO A PET FRIENDLY BEST WESTERN BECAUSE I HAD MY DOG WITH ME. I SPENT APPOX. $120 FOR THE ROOM, PLUS MEAL OF APPROX. $21. THE NEXT DAY I GOT A RIDE FROM AN EMPLOYEE AT THE HOTEL TO WALMART, PAID $128.66 FOR A NEW TIRE, THEN LATER THAT WEEK BALANCING OF $40 AT DISCOUNT TIRE IN DALLAS, TX. BECAUSE WALMART COULD NOT BALANCE THE NEW TIRE DUE TO EQUIPMENT BEING BROKEN. I HAD ANOTHER TIRE GO BAD, WITH TREAD SHIFT A YEAR LATER IN ANOTHER CLAIM FILED WITH YOU. THE REMAINING TWO TIRES I LEFT AT WALMART, AFTER PURCHASING FOUR NEW MATCHING GOODYEAR I SPENT $312.66 ON 9/26/20. AFTER THE SECOND TIRE WENT BAD I CONTACTED JULIE AT COOPER CALL REF# 23-167554 AND WAS TOLD THE TIRES WERE UNDER WARRANTY AND TO RETURN THEM TO WHERE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE WITH THE NEW COOPER'S ON IT WHICH WAS IN 2018. I DID AND WAS TOLD BY PAMELA CARTER THAT THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY BECAUSE AUTO NATION ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THE TIRES, BUT DID ADMIT THAT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE. ALL FILED ON A SEPARATE INCIDENT REPORT WITH NHTSA #11362968. IN CONCLUSION, TTWO BAD COOPER TIRES, THE REMAINING TWO I GAVE TO WALMART AS I AM CONCERNED THAT THEY WILL ALSO BLOW OUT. IN REGARDS TO COOPER TIRES THE MANUFACTURER INFO AND DOT NUMBER TO FOLLOW. I HAVE HAD TWO TIRES WITH FAILURE TO THE RADIAL BELT SHIFT. ONE TIRE BLEW OUT ON A TRIP TO TEXAS, I DO NOT HAVE IT, BUT THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID IT HAD A "BULGE" AND FAILED. UNDER STRESSFUL CONDITIONS ON A HIGHWAY I DID NOT TAKE A PICTURE. THE SECOND TIRE FAILED LOCALLY AND I HAVE KEPT THE TIRE AND CAN SEND A PIC AND ALSO HAVE A STATEMENT ON THE RECEIPT FROM WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THAT HAD PUT THE TIRES ON SAYING IT WAS A "BELT SHIFT" THERE IS A PROMINENT "BULGE" IN THE TIRE. I HAD ORIGINALLY CONTACTED COOPER TIRES JULIE CALL REF # 23-167554 ON 9/23/20 11:02 AM, REGARDING THE DEFECTIVE TIRES AND THEY DENIED KNOWLEDGE OR RESPONSIBILITY AND TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO WHERE I BOUGHT IT WHICH WAS NISSAN AUTO NATION BECAUSE THEY WERE UNDER WARRANTY. AUTO NATION PAMELA CARTER SAID ON 9/24/20 THEY THAT THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY DUE TO THE FACT THEY PURCHASED THE TIRES AND I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AFTER THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED SO I WAS NOT THE PURCHASER. THEY DO ADMIT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE, WHICH I HAVE IN WRITING ON INVOICE 1236567. I LOOKED ONLINE FOR THE DOT NUMBER FOR RECALL AND IT IS LISTED ONLINE BUT THE MANUFACTURER AS BRIDGESTONE, WHICH IS POSSIBLY A TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR.
