Sound deadening foam inside the tire delaminates and causes SEVERE wheel imbalance. This is a widespread issue on all the Hyundai Ioniq 5 forums with this tire. Mine cost me $300 and countless hours to diagnose. IT also severely impacted the cars handling and prevented the car from driving over 46mph (in my case), which is extremely dangerous on interstates. My local tire shop balanced the tires with the maximum allowed amount of weights, but then the vibration was still there at 59mph. The Hyundai dealer then diagnosed it and they charged me $180 to do a dynamic balance. According to their results, the tires were "bad" and needed to be replaced. I went to Costco to replace the tires at a cost of

Michelin Defender Tire with ~90% tread exploded with no indicators or warning. VDOT repairman indicated that it had exploded from the side. Incident happened on the highway 2/24/24 going 60mph. Jeep did not observe any potholes, road debris, or curbs. I do not do off-roading. Tires had 35psi. I drive average 6000 miles a year. Tire: LT 285/70R17 121/118R dot 1b7 bf 005x 2922 load range E. Wheel: PRC 7069/AT L 13+JK 17X9 33X12.50 R17 employee from tirerack.com confirmed tire/wheel are a match. Tire is available for inspection. Will have tire shop take it off the wheel and inquire to see if they can evaluate what happened. Tire has only been inspected by VDOT employee on site of incident. No sign of warnings or dashboard light before incident until after it blew up which produced a low tire pressure indicator. Has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer or independent service center. Safety was put in risk to driver and other drivers on highway going highway speed. Was able to control car to a stop. Jeeps are at higher risk of rolling over. Luckily nobody was hurt and no damage to vehicle other than the Tire.

The tire has an excessive and extremely disproportionate amount of wear on the inner part of the tire and sidewall. It is still on the car at this time. The location of the failure is hard to visually notice. My tire losing pressure was the cue something was wrong. It was on the verge of catastrophic failure and only luck prevented this from turning into an accident. This same failure has been reproduced on a large number of Tesla Plaid vehicles equipped with 21” rims and these Michelin tires. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. I will be taking it tomorrow for warranty review from Michelin. There were no symptoms of an impending failure at all. The only warning light that ever showed was a communication error with the sensor that read tire pressure. However, I always checked the pressure manually since that particular sensor was intermittent with its reporting. These tires are rated for 30k and I’m barely over 12k.
