The vehicle tells me to "stop and shift to park" while I am driving, and power was lost to accessories such as the climate control. Since the EGR was identified as the cause of the problem, the car remains on "Propulsion Power Reduced" mode. The EGR has been backordered for months, if not years, and aftermarket third-party EGR valves are not readily available either. However, there is no recall, and this is clearly a common problem on these vehicles as attested on GM-Volt forums. The EGR failed about one year ago, but now the message on reduced propulsion power is presented every time I start the vehicle.

Vehicle went to low power mode on the interstate (I4) and was unable to drive at normal safe speeds. Engine overheated and would not allow vehicle to drive over about 10 mph, had to drive slowly on interstate until I could pull off safely to let it cool and get towed home. Technicians verified it is the known EGR valve issue, which happens often and isnt covered under any warranty. From research online this is a common problem that strands people in Volts and GM wont fix and cant even get more parts for to repair vehicle. Can leave people with sudden power loss while driving and limit driving speeds to unsafe levels unexpectedly.

The EGR valve failed and has been on order for over 6 months. I unplugged it to keep the car operational, but it will not pass an environmental inspection without a new valve. THIS IS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT ON ONLINE FORUMS. Something needs to happen to force GM to resolve this issue.

Been having issues with the dealership sierra chevy of monrovia. Brake fluid light came on. My car has been at the dealer for over two months now in counting. Closer to 3 months. First time was in July 24, 2024 for a check engine light. Fast forward to today Nov 19th, 2025. The car has been back at the dealer for the same issue the brake fluid light. Its now almost past 2 weeks. I have talked to the service manager and advisor a week ago. they told me they are having issues finding where the leak is coming from after having my vehicle there the past month. So I told them it was fine for the mechanic to drive the vehicle and figure it out. Now its almost another week and the service manager and advisor are not responding to my calls and texts. Left the service manager 2 voicemails already. Please help me get my car fixed and back to me. Service manager told me he would help me out with a rental since its a reoccurring issues . No communication from the dealership at all. No one is responding. After they claim to have fixed my vehicle the issue came back in less than a week. Dropped my car at the dealership on Nov 6th, 2024. Scared my vehicle's brakes will fail! Its still under warranty. Dont want the car back till its fixed properly. Just want my vehicle to be fixed

On November 8, I was on a 5 hour drive and after 4 hours while driving on the gas engine since the 43 mile electric range was already depleted, a warning suddenly appeared on the dashboard screen - Shift to Park, something about reduced propulsion and the check engine light came on. I was driving 55 mph on a highway and immediately had no propulsion whatsoever. Tried to pull over and barely got to the edge of the highway with cars and trucks speeding behind me and then around me. On the roadside, the car would turn on and off and I could change gears with the shifter, but no matter what I did the propulsion to move the car would not work. The car had to be towed to the nearest dealership for repairs where it remains.

Dear NHTSA officer, I am writing to report a serious safety incident involving my 2017 Chevrolet Volt. On November 9, 2024, while driving with my family, our vehicle unexpectedly lost power without any warning. The details of the incident are as follows: Incident: The car powered off suddenly. Passengers: Myself, my wife, and our two children were in the vehicle. Aftermath: We were unable to restart the car despite multiple attempts. Resolution: It took two hours and assistance from neighbors to push the car back to our driveway. Upon researching this issue, I discovered that other 2017 Chevrolet Volt owners have reported similar symptoms, which appear to be related to Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) failures. Furthermore, I found that GM issued Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 18-NA-261 addressing "an internal issue within the Battery Energy Control Module" for Volt models. This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and reliability of our vehicle. I am requesting immediate attention to this matter, including: A thorough inspection and repair of our vehicle Information on any recalls or extended warranties related to this issue Assurance of the vehicle's safety for future use Given the potential danger posed by sudden power loss while driving, I believe this issue warrants urgent attention and possibly a wider recall. Thank you for your prompt attention to this critical safety matter. I look forward to your timely response and resolution. Sincerely,

Was driving on highway when given error ""Propulsion Power Reduced." This resulted in less power available, which is a safety hazard. Then after a while of driving (on the highway) I received the error "Engine Not Available," which caused me to have to continue on electric only power. If I did not have any battery left in the traction battery, I would have had to maneuver to the shoulder. The error code revealed by a scan with the OBD device P0403 relates to a failed EGR valve. There are no replacement parts for this valve, according to GM, so future failure is likely.

While operating my Chevy Volt on a Los Angeles Freeway, warning lights came on informing me to park immediately, and that the power propulsion was reduced. The Check Engine light also came on. At that point the “Shift to Park” message came on. My car is experiencing the “Shift to Park” issue. I already had this happen previously in 2023. The repair cost $1,200. There are many, many references to this issue on the Internet. The “Shift to Park” defect is well known in the Chevy Volt community. When this happened the SECOND time, ([XXX]), I was stranded on the side of an LA freeway. The car will not start. It will cycle through the “Shift to Park” message on the dashboard and it will not go anywhere. The car initializes, so there is power in the vehicle, but no propulsion. The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal, but the vehicle failed to exceed 30 MPH. The contact stated that the message "Propulsion Power Reduced" was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer, and it was diagnosed and determined that the 12V battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. Additionally, the contact stated that the hybrid battery was no longer charging and failed to turn on. The contact had the vehicle towed to the same dealer however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

In what appears to be (based on Google search) hundreds of Volts have the failure whereby the ERG valve fails, but GM is no longer making the part and has an indefinite date to produce them. When this part fails the engine light comes on the the vehicle is not allowed to go over 45 MPH, creating a safety issue when on highways (I live rural, all all roads are over >=55 MPH). GM is unwilling to trade the car at fair value for a new one, nor willing to provide loaners. So the car can only sit in the garage with no resolution. GM is aware of the issue, nut is unwilling to address.
