When depressing the brakes, heard a hissing sound and had a spongy break feeling. Could not stop as desired at a low speed and traveled into the busy intersection. Took car to Ford Dealer and they diagnosed it as a Brake Booster Failure. Was notified that Ford was fixing this for some VINs under 150k mileage, which my vehicle is. Was told that this agency was the deciding factor if my VIN was covered under this repair from Ford. Right time, right place, we could have been crushed. The dealership confirmed the issue with the Ford Edge, and the fact that there was a Customer Satisfaction sent to some VIN's for the 2013 Ford Edge. There were no warnings at all of this failure. None. One time was enough to go have it checked out before someone was injured or killed.

Power brakes will randomly fail, without any warning. Safety of driver and passengers, as well as other motorists are in danger with this problem. Master cylinder and brake booster are operating correctly. Abs pump motor is the problem. A valve is sticking inside it, causing brake fluid to bypass the brake calipers line and just go open loop in the abs circuit. Google and YouTube is full of the exact same problem. Factory part(s) did not even last 10years or 150,000 miles. Completely unacceptable for the most important system on a vehicle. No lights are on, basic scan tool finds no codes. Advanced scan tool finds a abs soft code:coo20:13-28. Ford wants over $3000 to fix with the exact same part that will fail again without notice. I am a small mechanic, and cannot do this repair because you have to have ford's special software.

It is believed by driver that booster hose has failed. This became apparent when driving through New Orleans on I-10 westbound. When I came off interstate exit to a street near where I was going, I had to almost stand on brake pedal to stop and keep from rearending car in front of me. I checked my brake fluid and it was full with no leaks. There are no leaks on inside under brake pedal. This vehicle is a 2013 Ford Edge SEL AWD assembled ay Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Hissing sound when the brake pedal was depressed and then the stiffness in the pedal itself. There was little to extremely little braking power and was very difficult to slow and stop the vehicle. Took the car to a local repair shop and determined that it was a faulty brake booster. They felt that it should be taken to the dealer, which I did. I did find out that this is a very common problem with the same make and model Fords. A Customer Satisfaction program 13N02 was launched but not for my vin. This is a very dangerous situation feel that more investigation should be done on this particular product.

This is not an unknown problem to NHTSA or Ford for covered vehicles. Brake booster failed, causing serious problems with the ability to stop the vehicle. For other 2013 Ford Edge and Mercury MKX vehicles, this repair is covered (NHTSA 10054925), while some of these vehicles are not covered for some reason, including this VIN. The brake booster failure on this vehicle presents no less of a safety issue than that of the covered vehicles, which received a Ford 10 year extended warranty on the brake booster. No warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms.
