2020 FORD EXPEDITION Complaints

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 70-75 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and unintendedly shifted to various gears continuously. The power train warning light was illuminated. The message "Power Train - Engine Failure - See Owner’s Manual" was displayed. Additionally, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the transmission assembly. The message "Reduced Engine Power“ was displayed, and the vehicle failed to respond upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The temperature gauge displayed 285 degrees. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the transmission yoke was replaced; however, the failure recurred several times while driving. The vehicle was taken to Red McCombs Ford (8333 I-10, San Antonio, TX 78230) and to Griffith Ford Seguin (1880 I-10, Seguin, TX 78155); where the transmission was replaced and rebuilt several times; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and was continuously shifting from high gear to low gear. The check engine warning light and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. Another driver honked and drew the contact's attention. The contact noticed a trail of white smoke and that there was smoke coming from the engine bay. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The vehicle was taken back to the first dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could no longer assist in covering the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Transmission jerks.Also transmission randomly drops out of gear at 60-65 m/h which make the vehicle stall.Putting passengers dangerous situations on highway.Very dangerous.Car been in shop twice but no adequate repairs been made.Requested transmission exchange which would take care of problem.Request been denied.Putting my wife and two of my children in danger.This car has 10R80 transmission which notoriously has bad reputation.Mechanic claims could not create issue but however does see some problem with the transmission.

I was driving 70mph when suddenly a red alert on the dashboard said coolant alert 402 degrees the car was not heating up at all before that. I pulled to the side of the road right away. Smoke started coming out trunk ran and in less than 2 minutes the car was on fire.

Transmission failure with gears 2-3-4-5-7. Hard jerking and shifting when attempting to accelerate. Transmission slips while driving especially at stop lights which can cause an accident or rear end accident. Putting other drivers at risk by not being able to fully control acceleration of vehicle coming on or off highway ramps. Ford dealership and dealership of purchase has been made aware of issues with vehicle. Gear shift failure as well has service wrench appears when troubles start and continue. Issues 1st appeared in April of 2024.

My park aid sensor fault comes on without cause and a picture of a car blocks the view to the screen that displays directions from google maps. It comes on suddenly and sporadically and has almost caused an accident several times as I don't know where I am going when this happens. I took my car to the dealership to get this fixed. The dealership charged me $213.79 for the diagnosis and stated that this happens to alert me to a problem related to when a vehicle is approaching on the left or right and the audio component does not work. In other words, when a vehicle is approaching, the lights on the mirrors flash on but the noise does not present. They then told me that to stop the dangerous flashing of the car blocking my view of the map, that I would be charged almost $800 to repair. I told them I couldn't afford it and asked if they could just stop the random car display from happening and covering my map. To me, this is much more dangerous than the main quality defect preventing the sounds. I was told that they were not allowed to disable this malfunction and that it was not considered a quality defect or recall issue. I am currently driving in an unsafe vehicle due to a design flaw in a vehicle that is not yet 4 years old that I can't afford to fix myself. The fields below don't allow me to enter information. I have not been in an accident yet due to this. It happens at various speeds. My vehicle has about 52000 miles on it.

I read that there is a recall on 2021/2022 Fords with Eco Boost but not the 2020. I have had my vehicle into the dealership multiple times due to misfires and loss of all power which has almost caused multiple accidents on the interstate. I accelerate to get into the left lane and lose all power and do not get power back until my vehicle decelerates down to around 40 mph/or a lower gear, causing semi’s and other vehicles to have to slam on their brakes so that they do no run into the back of me. It idles very roughly and overall has been the worst vehicle mechanically that I have ever owned. The dealerships always say they cannot find anything wrong with it or cannot reproduce it but it happens on a daily basis and keeps getting worse. I have had the transmission updated, changed the cool packs, and changed the plugs which has not helped at all. I want to know why the 2020 Expedition is not included in this recall? This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and I would expect it to run smoothly with no issues and I am very disappointed. Not only disappointed in the vehicle, but in Ford itself for not acknowledging this issue. I have read many complaints from other customers experiencing the same issues and unable to find a fix for it. I would like some answers and for Ford to make things right with my Expedition. I am not able to trade it in or sell it due to having all the issues that it has and frankly I’m not sure I trust Ford anymore or if I’ll ever buy a Ford product again and we have been faithful Ford owners for years. The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle hesitated and jolted while shifting gear. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred at various speeds while shifting gear. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the vehicle was safe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 59,158.

This has happened many times throughout my ownership of the vehicle. At times, when trying to accelerate into traffic, changing lanes, etc. The vehicle make a loud clunking noise when it tries to downshift. The transmission acts as if it has no idea what gear to go into. A "system fault" with a wrench appears on the center display along with an audible alarm. The vehicle either loses power altogether or it has downshifted into an extremely low gear which brings the rpms near redline. On several occasions this has put my family in dangerous situations. We came close to getting in a collision more than once. It has frightened my daughter who has special needs. Upon bringing it to ford while the warranty was still in place, they claim they could not replicate the problem. On the way back home from the dealer, it happened again. We made ANOTHER appointment for service, they reflashed the transmission strategy and said it's fixed. It was ok for maybe a few weeks, but the problem continues. Now the warranty is up, and we are still stuck with the same issue which is becoming more and more frequent. Ford will not repair it without charging, yet this issue existed while the warranty was still in place. It's a known defect that presented itself while the warranty was still in place. It was never repaired, Ford only applied a band-aid to get past the powertrain warranty.

Driving down a highway the right side front trim that extends from the top of the windshield to the front of the luggage rack ripped off and it took a piece of the luggage rack off with it. It caused the vehicle behind me to swerve to avoid hitting it and nearly caused an accident. My local Ford Dealership told me that there is an active recall # 24S02 currently exists for similar reasons but does not currently cover my 2020 vehicle.

Driving at non-highway speeds on roads with hills, the vehicle aggressively downshifts occasionally. It isn't all the time, and it is difficult to duplicate, but it feels rough. I believe a TSB has been issued for this issue. It is well documented and should be recalled, as the known issue was repaired in the 2024 model.
