GMC Complaints

Without any notice, I lost my power steering while driving. The wheel jerked to the side, and when I corrected I realized that I no longer had power steering. I was still able to "steer" my vehicle, but not without brute force. If it were someone of lesser ability (e.g. elderly) it may have led to a devastating outcome. I have yet to get the issue diagnosed, as it just happened yesterday, but it certainly is concerning! I just wanted to bring this to the attention of the NHTSA, as I've since learned that I'm not the first GM Sierra owner to suffer this malfunction.

Engine suddenly lost power at highway speed. Truck was still running so I was able to get off the highway. Engine failure was caused by bent lifter. Lifter failure also caused damage to the camshaft. Vehicle was at dealership for significant time with a large repair bill that GM is not willing to cover due to the vehicle being 5 weeks out of warranty

A lifter in my cylinder is bad and damage to my cam shaft. This truck also has the 6.2L engine that was recalled for other GMC Vehicles.My safety was put at risk as I was driving it and it started smoking. I have had 2 different mechanics look at it. One mechanic was an independent business, the other was a certified GMC dealer. There was no warning lamps or messages.

Engine Failure. 1. The lifter in cylinder 5 failed (dropped) this prompted me to bring the truck in initially. 2. Upon further inspection all the cam bearings were scored and out of spec. Waited 4 months for an engine replacement from GM. Eventually I cut my losses and sent the block to a machine shop. This was all paid out of pocket. Truck had 74,000 miles on it.

THE BRAKE LIGHT IS OUT AND A SINGLE TAIL LIGHT IS OVER 500$ Very dangerous to have tail light out and can cause an accident. There should be a recall on these defective LED lights.

This occurred 5+ years ago. Coming home one night I had a sudden loss of power with the truck and barely made it home. Was able to limp the truck to the dealership the next day and was told that one side of the engines lifters had failed. Prior to the failure I had noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine that was becoming increasingly more prominent. It was several thousand dollars to repair. Fortunately the failure occurred near home, not on the freeway where I could have been dodging cars while trying to limp the truck to the shoulder. Some online research while the repair was being done revealed that several other owners with the 6.2L engine had the same problem. When I mentioned it to the dealer the response was that they had no bulletins from GM on the issue and I was stuck with the bill. Got the same response a year or two later when the torque converter on the transmission went out. The reason I am reporting it now is I saw that GM is recalling 6.2L vehicles with lifter issues but not back to 2015 even though the issue appears to go back farther than that. They claim it's limited to a specific run of engines for the recall. They have been having various lifter problems for many years that have put drivers in danger when they fail but refuse to acknowledge it. As for the repair they made to the engine I've driven another 70 K miles and the ticking has started again. I fear another failure. Please note that the date previously given for the incident is my best guess.

Engine lag and performance drops while driving vehicle. Vehicle was taken to the dealership and remained at dealership for five days. Employee was given permission to drive the vehicle to experience the issue. Issue was confirmed by dealership, but they stated it's one of three issues and they would have to repair all three issues at my cost to figure out what's causing the engine lag.

Sudden lost of power while driving. I was driving on the i95 and out of nowhere the vehicle shut off in the middle of the highway. It was a scary moment because I could of been in serious accident. All the engine signs were displayed on the dashboard.

The car started to have issues shifting when driving- automatic transmission. It would jolt or shudder to try to shift. I was at a light intersection attempting to turn left to go on the on ramp of a highway, it attempted to shift as I sped up from a stop and it got stuck and started making a sound as if you were to press the brake and gas at the same time, similar to that, a car was coming in my direction at the same time and it finally clicked into gear. Absolutely terrified me, my father in law came and switched me vehicles and took mine to the dealership where it stayed for 3 days and they diagnosed it saying it needed a new transmission, quoting us at $11,000. Obviously we can’t afford that. We had all the filters and lines of the transmission cleaned. And now it’s just gotten worse and worse. That was the first time it happened. Now it’ll shudder like that any time it’s switching gears at any speed. Another time since then, it got stuck in the same situation after pulling out of my kids school driveway, it got stuck and wouldn’t click, when it finally did it started shaking uncontrollably in the street and thankfully I live two streets over and made it to my street before it just shut off on its own. I coasted it right into the front of our house and then it would not come back on, at this time we searched the internet over and over to find try to find an easy fix. We let it sit before it came back on. This is our family vehicle. I’ve seen that many many people have this exact issue with this exact same year and model. Its not coincidental and It’s extremely unsafe. Especially with kids in these vehicles. I’m terrified one day when it gets stuck or shuts off we will get hit.

The contact owns a 2021 GMC Terrain. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V339000 (Child Seat); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle would not be inspected or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
