The Power Transfer Unit was determined to be faulty by both a certified mechanic as well as Casa Chrysler Jeep- a verified Jeep dealership. Due to the failure of this part, the vehicle was deemed unsafe to operate by both the dealership and my Certified Mechanic-as it can loose power and seize up completely, resulting in crash and or injury . A full detailed inspection report by both my personal mechanic and the dealership can be provided if necessary.According to the NHTSA, “ 67,248 Jeep Cherokees between 2014 and 2017” have this exact issue. The automaker recall number is W47 and recall campaign number is 20V343.

The transmission jerks when at a light it jerks forward. This is unsafe as I feel it could hit the car in front. I reported it to the dealer which I purchased and they say the transmission is gone. There is only 36898 miles on it. The dashboard lights shuts off while driving not allowing you to see the speed of the vechile or any other instruments.

Driving with 5 year old grandson when vehicle violently began shifting into park. Dash panel warning said to shift into park before selecting desired gear. This happened multiple times while in traffic, almost causing us to be rear-ended. Gear shift changes became violent as if we were being rear-ended as vehicle slammed into gear. Car shut down several times. Problem re-occurred in July when driving my 97 year old father on the 495 beltway (after dealership charged $1,100 for replacing TCM and reprogram). This time car bucked and message came up on dash display to shift into park before selecting desired gear. Car did this 4 times while driving causing great risk because car had shifted into neutral and would not go unless stopped and placed back into park. Now dealership saying no codes and wanting to change rear diff on a guess.

After taking my vehicle to a dealership for the transmission recall (transmission going into neutral while driving) the transmission started acting the same way just a couple of weeks later. I brought it back to the dealership and was told they couldn't do anything and I would have to call Chrysler. I am now getting "the run around" with Chrysler customer service about fixing the transmission that the recall messed up.

I was driving the Jeep on a 4 lane highway @ 65 mph when the emergency brake light on the display came on as well as the brake itself & then it refused to shift manually or automatically (either option is available normally) & service transmisson light came on almost immediately causing me to abruptly lose speed. The9 engine was pulling over 4000 rpm to go 40 & get to the side of the highway. I was almost hit from behind due to the vehicle suddenly losing speed as I was in the left lane when this occurred & had to get to right side to stop. After vehicle was in park, I looked & the light on ebrake button was not on. I pushed brake control & light came on. Then I again pushed the ebrake switch & light went out. Put it in drive & Jeep still refused to shift properly. I stopped again, put in park & turned it off then back on hoping that would help. It did not make dash lights go out so I proceeded to nearest exit & as I was within 2 miles of my residence I drove it there slowly with emergency flashers on. This is not the 1st transmisson issue I have had with the vehicle. In addition to the numerous recalls for tranny issues, I had to pay $1,000 last fall to replace a chip in the "lifetime sealed 9 spd transmisson". I am afraid to drive the vehicle due to this issue. There was no warning, it just happened. I was alone in the Jeep & did not engage the parking brake. It was not engaged prior to my starting this drive either. I live in Iowa & it's very flat here so brake is rarely engaged. I have an appt at Deery Brothers service dept in Ames Iowa 6/30/22 as this was 1st available appointment following the incident. I have filed a complaint with the manufacturer as well.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that upon placing her vehicle into park(P), the parking brake independently engaged while attempting to shift to drive(D). The contact was able to disengage the parking brake by holding down the parking brake button. While the contact attempted to make a left turn at 30 MPH, the contact released the parking brake button and the parking brake immediately engaged as the "service parking brake" message displayed. The contact was unable to move the vehicle and the vehicle was towed to a dealer. The mechanic discovered that 6-inches of water had been retained in the spare tire compartment. The mechanic believed that water had entered the vehicle through the rear corner seams of vehicle. The mechanic believed that the water build up had led to an electrical short which caused the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. The contact states that this report is no longer valid and the information is inaccurate. Please refer to VOQ 11487870.

PTU failed while driving, the vehicle’s computer threw a code and disabled the 4WD. A google search seems to show that this is a pretty widespread defect with the Cherokee. The dealer is charging me $4,000 to make the repair. They say It will take them a week to secure a replacement part.

we will be drving the car and on the instrument cluster we will get " shift to park" message and car will go into neutral while driving. we would have to stop the car and shift to park and back to drive. this has happened numerous times on the street or freeway. 3 dealers for jeep did not know what and how this is happening no codes pop up. it is extremly dangerous and after reviewing this is happening with jeeps and no fix is available.
