2022 TESLA MODEL Y Complaints

When I have Autopilot (adaptive cruise) on, the car will often slow down, sometimes quite abruptly, when there is nothing to slow down for. This is often called Phantom Braking. This can easily put me at risk of getting rear-ended from another car. If I'm on ice or snow it can cause the car to slide and loose control. I have read on the internet and forums of many with 2021 or 2022 Model Y's with the same problem - since the radar was removed on these newer cars. I had a 2020 Model Y previously that had the radar, and I never had this problem. I believe their camera only technology is not enough to suffice and they need the redundancy of both radar and cameras.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving at 65 MPH with the Self-Driving features activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that were no other vehicles or objects nearby. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle increased in speed and the contact continued to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had been occurring several times per day while using the Self-Driving feature. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000. The consumer stated the phantom braking was only experienced in auto pilot mode. After notifying tesla updates were made and the problem was resolved.

I was driving 55Mph with Autopilot engaged. Without warning the car engaged the brakes aggressively and I was almost rear ended.

I had cruise control set(Autopilot) and was driving on a two lane highway at night. My car abruptly braked when oncoming traffic was detected. Another oncoming car on the same road, caused my car to abruptly brake again. Then a third car a couple of minutes later caused my car to abruptly brake again. I turned the cruise control(Autopilot) off, to prevent my car from emergency braking. The problem was not reported since I couldn't repeat the issue. It has not been inspected by anyone. No warnings on vehicle.

Phantom braking happens during auto pilot feature and during any use of cruise control. This happens nearly 100% of the time while using these two features and any incoming traffic approaches, especially larger vehicles and trucks. The braking is sometimes soft, but more often quite abrupt, and always without notice. It is extremely dangerous and annoying to use

While driving from San Francisco to Salt lake city and back on highway 80 this past week, my vehicle frequently experienced “phantom braking” while using “autopilot”. At least 15 times on the drive, my car, while using “autopilot”, would forcefully apply the brakes when no hazard was present. While most times it slowed the car from 80mph to 70-75 and then resumed normal operation, one time it slammed on the brakes so hard and dropped the vehicle speed down to 50 before I could intervene and avoid a rear end collision. The system was even worse at night, but only when passing large semi-trucks. They were in the right lane and as my car would approach to pass in the left lane it would slam on the brakes and slow down. It got to the point where I would turn off autopilot every time I was about to pass a truck at night. I also noticed it only seemed to happen on two lane highways—two lanes in each direction, and only when I was in the left lane, again mostly as I was passing a large truck that was driving in the right lane. This is particularly concerning as a few times there were cars behind me that could have easily rear ended me as there was no hazard indicating that they should slow down.

I experienced two incidents of phantom braking while making a round trip from Reno Nevada to Sacramento California on Interstate 80 on March 3, 2022. The first incident (approx. 10:15 AM) occurred west bound and west of Donner summit. My speed was approximately 70 MPH traveling in the right lane. Several big rig trucks were parked on the shoulder. There were no cars directly in front of me and one car slightly ahead in the left lane. Autopilot was engaged. Suddenly the car braked violently and reduced speed to under 40 MPH. I retained control and continued driving. In the second incident (Approx. 1:30 PM) my wife was driving east on I 80 (with autopilot engaged) at approximately 70 MPH. As she attempted to change lanes to allow a car to pass to our left, emergency braking again was violently engaged. The car behind us had to take very quick evasive action to avoid a collision. A high speed collision was extremely narrowly avoided. There were no vehicles for hundreds of yards ahead of us nor any parked along the highway and no obstacles on the highway. At the spot where the braking occurred the highway began to slope upward, possibly creating the illusion of an obstacle..

We recently purchased this vehicle and was driving down the highway with zero traffic near us in any lane and the Model Y slammed on the brakes for no apparent reason. Luckily no one was behind us. This continues to be a problem with phantom braking for no reason. It’s very dangerous and almost makes the vehicle unable to be driven.

When in Traffic Aware Cruise Control the car would brake suddenly for no apparent reason. I’m not sure whether it is available for inspection upon request. Sudden unexplained braking could be a safety hazard if it occurs when a vehicle is travelling behind. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service station. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were not any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This problem occurred at least 6 times when travelling on the highway between Lake Charles, LA and San Antonio, TX on 2/27/2022 and 24 times when travelling on the highway between San Antonio, TX and Las Cruces, NM on 2/28/2022. We observed that the frequency of these sudden unexplained braking occurrences increases when the light is filtered through partly sunny/partly cloudy skies. In bright cloudless conditions or in overcast conditions the unexplained braking does not happen. On 3/1/2022 the day after we had 24 occurrences we drove from Las Cruces, NM to Scottsdale, AZ in bright cloudless conditions and we didn’t experience any sudden braking.

Phantom Braking occurred four times in under an hour. Sunny conditions, clear lines.
