CONTINENTAL CROSSCONTACT LX20 TIRES Complaints

We were driving down the highway and the vehicle started shaking. I immediately slowed down as I felt we had a flat. There was notification on the screen. I moved to the right onto the shoulder. Only after we were completely stopped did I see a low tire warning come on display. I slowly got out as the traffic was heavy. I could see the outer section of the tire came apart from both sides. As we were in a dangerous location someone called the police. Two police cars pulled behind us and provided us some safety. We agreed to swap out bad tire for spare as we were in a very dangerous location and needed to get vehicle moved before someone ran into all of us. We did look at the highway to ensure no objects were in the road. I didn’t see any while driving, but we wanted to verify to protect other drivers. There also weren’t any pot-holes in highway. We inspected tire after taking it off and there were no screws, nails, objects, or damage to the center tread/sides. The tire seemed to separate fairly cleanly on both sides. Tires were Continental Cross-contact 255/45 R22 107V LX20 (Eco plus) To repeat, no Warning Lights came on vehicle before tire came apart. I have sent message to my insurance company. No one has inspected tire and it is in my possession.

225 / 70 R 16 A tire shop inspected my tires and said that all 4 of my belts are separating and indicated to me a convex shape that peaks in the center of the steel belt. These tires were purchased new some years ago when they were balanced, struts replaced, and full alignment, yet at speeds 55+ the car made a vibration that no shop was able to identify. Yesterday I hit a nail in the center of the tread, but it punctured in a very uncharacteristic way. This prompted me to take it to a tire shop where they said "I've not ever seen something like this before where the belts are separating on all tires like this." I drive ~12K miles per year in residential areas and have kept my tires at 31psi. Out of curiosity, I looked online for recalls and found this same tire (but in different sizes) having recalls for this exact reason. Might it be possibly that my size too should be included in the recall but was somehow overlooked due to being a less popular size?

Upon inspection, the contact's husband noticed there was a bump on the passenger's side front tire. The vehicle was taken to a tire store where it was diagnosed that there was a tread bump on the passenger's side front tire due to a fractured tire tread belt. The passenger's side front tire was not replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact's husband to take the vehicle to an authorized tire dealer for inspection. The failure mileage was 37,619.

The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact inspected the front driver’s and passenger’s side tires and noticed the threads were coming off in chunks. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was a recall, but the tires were outside the date of manufacturing for the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the tires were beyond the three-year warranty and did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.

My 2019 Chevy Traverse was purchased new in August of 2018. It has approx 34,500 miles on it as of 7/26/21. Tire size: 255/55 R 20 107H. The vehicle has been in for regular maintenance/service at the original dealership since it was purchased. Around March 2021, I noticed the outside tread on all 4 tires becoming brittle and breaking off. There are small chunks of the tread missing and some type of thread showing where the chunks have come off. I went to my local Costco and the associate in the tire department told me that I should not be driving on it because the tires could blow. I wanted a second opinion and went to my local Discount Tire. The associate told me that what was happening was called "chunking" and it was not common (actually rare to happen) and I should call Continental Tire. No alarms/warning lamps have gone off due to this issue.

OUR 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM THE DEALERSHIP IN AUGUST 2017. THE TIRES THAT CAME WITH THE TRUCK ARE CONTINENTAL CROSSCONTACT LX20. I BEGAN TO NOTICE CHUNKS OF RUBBER TREAD COMING OFF OF ALL 4 TIRES WHEN THEY HAD APPROXIMATELY 27,000 MILES. I HAD THEM INSPECTED AT THE DEALERSHIP DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NORMAL WEAR FOR THESE TIRES. THE TIRES ARE RATED FOR 70,000 MILES. I CURRENTLY HAVE 36,500 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND TOOK IT IN FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND TIRE ROTATION. I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO PITTING AND CHUNKING. THERE IS GOOD TREAD LEFT ON THE TIRES, HOWEVER THE RUBBER IS COMING OFF IN HUGE CHUNKS ON ALL 4 TIRES. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN CONTACTED TO ADDRESS MY CONCERNS.

THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE FRONT DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SCHUMACHER CHEVROLET OF DENVILLE (281 US-46, DENVILLE, NJ 07834) AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL THE CHARGES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTINENTAL MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 800-847-3349 AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL, AND THAT THE CONTACT HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. A CASE NUMBER WAS NOT PROVIDED. THE APPROXIMATE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000.

DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND SLOWING DOWN TO EXIT OFF THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY CAR STARTED SHAKING AND I REALIZED I HAD A FLAT TIRE FOR THE SECOND TIME IN FOUR MONTH. DEALERSHIP CLAIMS I HIT SOMETHING WHICH CAUSED THE TIRE TO BREAK APART.
