COOPER DISCOVERER A/T TIRES Complaints

The contact's granddaughter owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with Cooper Tires, Tire Line: Discoverer EnduraMax, Tire Size: P245/65/R17, DOT Number: [XXX] . The contact stated while the driver was driving at 70 MPH, the rear passenger's tire had a blowout. The driver was able to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where the tire was inspected, and the contact became aware that the tire had blown out at the sidewall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the defective tire was shipped to the manufacturer for inspection. The manufacturer later informed the contact that the tire failure had been caused by a pinhole that gradually deflated the tire until the tire had the blowout; however, the contact stated that the TPMS did not indicate a loss of tire air pressure prior to the blowout, and that the failure had occurred abruptly. The manufacturer offered to partially reimburse the cost of the tire. The contact purchased a new tire from the dealer and replaced the tire himself. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 189,000, and the tire failure mileage was approximately 4,000. The VIN was not available. The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 equipped with Cooper Tires, Tire Line: Discoverer A/T3 XLT, Tire Size: 265/70/R18, DOT Number: UP511NE. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH in inclement weather, the contact heard a loud explosion, and then the vehicle swerved. The contact checked the side door mirrors and saw that the rear passenger's side tire had detached, and the tire had struck two other vehicles. The contact nearly lost control of the vehicle but was able to pull over to the side of the roadway. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that half of the rear passenger's sidewall tire remained attached to the rim. AAA arrived on the scene and replaced the passenger's side tire with a spare tire. The spare tire was not replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The tire manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall for the tire. The tire failure mileage was unknown. The vehicle failure mileage was 96,000. The VIN was unavailable.

In May 2022, I purchased four Cooper Discoverer A/T All-Season 117T 275/55/R20 tires from Walmart.com for my 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT. In May 2023 my vehicle developed a vibration when driving at certain speeds, so I took it to a GMC dealer for a tire rotation and balance. The mechanic discovered that one of the tires had a large bubble on the inner sidewall. He considered it such a safety risk that he insisted on removing the tire and replacing it with the spare before he would let me drive home. The tire was replaced with another of the same kind and tread depth. Yesterday (September 28 2023) I felt that my truck was wandering and swaying. I made an appointment for it to be inspected on Monday, and planned not to drive it until then. Today I observed that the rear passenger tire appeared low. I was shocked to find a split in the inner sidewall approximately one third of the circumference of the tire. I also found a large bubble on the inner sidewall of the driver's side front tire. I am shaken that I could have had three different tires blow out potentially killing myself and other motorists. I will be retaining the tires for inspection, and photographs have been taken. The manufacturer has been contacted. It seems that other model tires have been recalled by Cooper for the same issue, but I have not found a recall for this specific tire.

Sep 2020 purchased 6 Cooper Discoverer AT3 (LT235/80 R17) tires to replace OEM tires, mileage 12,885. On/around Sep 2022 while towing a 38' 5th wheel trailer, front end of truck started bouncing, mileage 26,334. Both driver and passenger tires where found to have tread separation. Replaced those two with same make/model new tires. All other tires where rotated and balanced. New tires went to inner rear wheels. On/around Aug 2023, once again while towing large 5th wheel trailer, front of truck started bouncing when turning to the left, muted vibration when turning to the right. Tire shop found passenger front tire tread separation again. This was one of the orginal 6 from 2020, mileage 33,762. Since 3 of the 6 tires failed I replaced all 7 (spare included) Cooper tires at my expense.

The contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with Cooper tires, Tire Line: Discoverer A/T, Tire Size: 225/75R17, and DOT Number: UT2Y1DF1515. The contact stated that all four tires had cracks along the sidewall. The tire dealer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the manufacturer and the NHTSA Hotline. The tires were not replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

lt245/70r17 we had the other front tire separate a few weeks ago. the employee was driving a few miles an hour on property when she felt and heard a thumping. immediately parked it. this is the 3rd tire in the last couple of months, all of them cooper discover LT tires without significant mileage that have had blets/tread split/separate. I foudn that there was a 500000 tire recall of this line last year. i think the problem is bigger.

Hello, I noticed sidewall bulging on all 4 of my cooper discoverer A/T 275/55R20. After googling I saw that a recall exists (NHTSA campaign nr:21T002000) Then I called and sent all my DOT to cooper and they said my tires are the Wall-mart special version which is not included in this recall. So I tried Wall-mart and they are not helping either (no recall exists is always their answer...) My 4 tires are the exact size and produced in the week listet in the recall 21T002000 and show the exact same issues (big bulges in sidewall which are filled with air) just the fact that it is a Discoverer A/T tire not a Discoverer A/T3 4S makes cooper tell me my tires are not in the recall. I believe there are more faulty tires out there and you should look into this since 4 out of 4 tires I have are bad. I am happy to bring my car to you guys to analyse

LT 265 / 70 R 17 Driving at normal highway speed. No warning lamps, no messages, no other symptoms until heard a loud "bang" and steering became very difficult. Pulled over immediately to find a rear tire had exploded at edge of sidewall. The entire tread was blown off in one piece and caused damage to the vehicle. If I hadn't had a firm grip on the steering wheel before the tire blew up, I believe that I may have lost control of the truck, with possible injuries to occupants or bystanders nearby.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 equipped with Cooper Discoverer A/T-3 tires, Tire Size: LT235/80/R17, DOT number: (UPAB1AU4513). While driving 65 MPH, the front passenger’s tire blew out. The blowout left a dent on the front passenger’s side door as well as damaged the front panel on the passenger’s side of the vehicle. The tire was then replaced with the spare. A few hours later while driving 50 mph, the front driver’s side tire also experienced a blowout. The blowout also damaged the driver’s side door as well as the front driver’s side panel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the tires were not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21T002000 (Tires). The tires were not replaced. The tire failure mileage was approximately 6,000. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 205,000.

WENT TO MY LOCAL GARAGE TO GET MY TIRES BALANCED. MECHANIC REPORTED THAT 1 OF THE 4 TIRES (ALL BOUGHT TOGETHER) WAS BEGINNING TO COME APART INTERNALLY / BELT SEPARATION. THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED DURING OCTOBER OF 2019. THEY HAVE LESS THAN 8000 MILES ON THE TIRES. VENDOR IS REIMBURSING ME FOR THE ONE TIRE THAT WAS FOUND TO HAVE THE DEFECT. THANKFULLY THIS WAS CAUGHT EARLY, BUT AM VERY CONCERNED AS THE OTHER 3 TIRES HAVE THE SAME DOT NUMBER.
