Just bought a 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia from Carvana and two days later while driving the check engine light came on along with the electronic throttle light and the auto start/stop light. While driving the vehicle went into complete limp mode in a busy intersection and I had to pull off quickly to avoid being hit by other traffic. Engine codes came up fuel pressure related.

The vehicle is experiencing multiple system malfunctions involving the engine performance, fuel system, and electronic throttle control, including engine shaking while idling, activation of the check engine light, a “start/stop unavailable” message, limp mode (inability to switch between driving modes), and illumination of the electronic throttle control warning light. One dealership suggested the issue may be related to an open fuel pump recall after noting that previously replaced spark plugs were heavily carbon-fouled, indicating excessive fuel combustion; however, another dealership diagnosed the engine as “scored” and recommended major repair. This diagnosis is disputed, as an independent mechanic performed a borescope inspection and reported no visible internal engine damage. The issue is intermittent—some days the vehicle operates normally, while other days it becomes undrivable. This creates a safety risk, as the vehicle may unexpectedly enter limp mode, limiting acceleration and drivability in situations such as merging or navigating traffic. I have not been involved in any accidents related to this issue and avoid driving the vehicle when symptoms are present. The vehicle has been inspected by both a dealership and an independent mechanic, but not by police or insurance representatives. Warning lights and symptoms, including the check engine light, electronic throttle control light, and start/stop warning, began appearing prior to the drivability failure and around the same time I received notice of the fuel pump recall. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

I experienced an unexpected Loss of Motive Power (LOMP) event. Late afternoon traffic was fast, estimate 75-80 MPH. I attempted to change lanes get to the righthand shoulder and was very nearly involved in a high-speed collision with a semi-petroleum tank truck. He applied his brakes to avoid hitting me and started to jackknife, but regained control and continued. The truck missed by inches. At this point I had NO remaining power and was essentially coasting until I managed to cross the remaining two lanes of traffic to the shoulder emergency lane. I reset the error codes and continued home with no further occurrences. The incident produced the following warning lamps: Electronic Throttle Control Failure, Start/Stop System Failure and Check Engine, then a few seconds later the Limp Mode/LOMP event. I carry an OBD Scanning Tool with me to be able to clear the error codes when I encounter them. They are typically a cascading event that can result in LOMP. I have experienced a total of 26 of these error lamp events since 4/19/22 which have resulted in 3 LOMP's. The remaining 23 events I was able to reset before the inevitable LOMP. This is the first LOMP that nearly caused a fatal accident, the remainder I was able to safely find a place to stop to perform the resets. There is an active Manufacturer Recall Number93C, NHTSA Recall Number25V-586 that may cover this issue. The Recall Status is "Incomplete, remedy not yet available." The Alfa Romeo dealership has noted the P0191-00 error and replaced the fuel pressure sensor on 2/23/23, but this did not solve the problem. Owner's forums, and now the Manufacturer/NHTSA recall have reported this as a known problem, so I have been clearing my own error codes in order to at least have a car to drive. In my mind, this nuisance has now become a potentially very dangerous condition.

  • 2024 ALFA ROMEO TONALE PHEV
    - McKinney, TX

I own a 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale. The rear passenger seatbelt became internally jammed and would not retract or function properly. The belt appears to have twisted within the retractor mechanism during normal use. The condition is not user-correctable and requires removal of interior trim and access to the retractor assembly to resolve. This indicates that the seatbelt mechanism allowed the belt to become internally tangled and locked. There is no visible damage, fraying, or evidence of misuse. The vehicle is new, and the seatbelt has only been used under normal conditions, including use with a child passenger. The dealership diagnosed the issue as a “twisted/tangled belt” and denied warranty coverage, stating it was caused by external influence, but did not provide evidence of misuse or component damage. This raises a safety concern because a seatbelt should not become internally jammed to the point that it cannot retract or function without disassembly. A failure of the retractor to properly manage belt alignment during normal use could impair occupant protection in the event of a crash. I am reporting this as a potential defect in the seatbelt retractor system.

Despite the seriousness of the outstanding recall (25V-586), which Stellantis acknowledges can result in a sudden and complete loss of engine power at high speeds, Alfa Romeo/Stellantis have provided exactly zero updates in nearly 8 months since the recall was announced. In speaking with my dealer, I’ve learned that Alfa Romeo/Stellantis were initially providing vague estimates for when they expected a recall fix to be available but have since stopped providing information to the dealers altogether. The manufacturer’s behavior in the face of such a serious safety risk is alarming and leads me to question whether a fix is actually even under development or will ever be available. Without action or the threat of action by the government to force the manufacturer to comply with their obligations to vehicle owners I have no confidence that this serious safety issue will be satisfactorily addressed at all, much less in a timely manner.

Subject: Formal Demand for Remedy – Safety Recall / 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio (VIN: [XXX] ) To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally demand immediate resolution regarding a serious safety recall affecting my 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio (VIN: [XXX] ). The recall, issued in September 2025, involves a defect in the fuel delivery module that may result in a loss of motive power. This defect presents a significant safety hazard, increasing the risk of a crash, injury, or worse. Despite the severity of this issue, I have not been provided with a remedy, repair timeline, or adequate alternative solution. It is unacceptable that I am expected to continue operating—or assume the risk of operating—a vehicle with a known safety defect and no available fix. This situation has caused ongoing concern, inconvenience, and diminished confidence in the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Given the lack of a timely and effective remedy, I am formally requesting that Alfa Romeo take one of the following actions immediately: Provide a permanent repair within a reasonable and clearly defined timeframe; OR Repurchase (buy back) the vehicle at fair market value; OR Provide a comparable replacement vehicle at no cost to me If this matter is not resolved promptly, I am prepared to pursue further action, including but not limited to filing additional complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seeking relief under applicable state lemon laws, and exploring other legal remedies available to me. Please treat this matter with the urgency it requires. I request a written response within 10 business days of receipt of this letter outlining the steps Alfa Romeo will take to resolve this issue. Thank you for your immediate attention to this serious safety concern. [XXX] and [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] or [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

A persistent humming/whining noise occurs at highway speeds (around 60–70 mph). The noise has been present for more than two years and has continued through multiple major repairs. The sound appears to come from the drivetrain area and raises concerns about a potential driveline or mechanical failure at speed. The issue has been reproduced and confirmed by multiple authorized dealerships. The vehicle has undergone two rear differential replacements, a transfer-case replacement, chassis ear testing, STAR engineering cases, and testing with OEM wheels and tires. The noise remains after all repairs. The manufacturer’s Area Representative test-drove the vehicle and verified the noise. Despite this, the manufacturer has stated that no further repairs will be approved, and the vehicle was returned with the defect still present. The vehicle has been out of service for more than 100 days for attempts to diagnose and repair this issue. The unresolved noise at highway speeds creates a safety concern because it may indicate an underlying drivetrain problem that could worsen or fail while driving. There were no warning lights or messages. The only symptom is the persistent noise at highway speeds.
