2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO- Indianapolis, IN
While making a left turn through an intersection, the vehicle's engine shut down without any warning. The electronics were still powered. My safety was put at risk, as other drivers were also going through the intersection. If this issue occurs again at another random time and I lose power while driving, this could easily result in an accident. I have not had it inspected by a mechanic, since it just happened, but have read online that others with Chevy Colorados have had this issue and could not find the cause.

While driving the Colorado without warning and unexpectedly will lose power steering and lock as I’m driving. It has happened over 10 different times and most recently this past Monday 6/6/22 as I was driving and about to make a right turn. It almost caused an accident because my truck couldn’t turn. Two service engine signs will display on the screen and after I pull over and turn off the truck then turn back on, the screen will reset and power steering works again. The Montebello Chevrolet dealer won’t fix it because they said the check engine light is not on. This is an imminent danger on the road and needs to be fixed.

My 2016 Chevrolet Colorado power steering suddenly failed while on a winding canyon road and I received 2 error messages on my dash. One error was for “stability track” the other was for “power steering service”. The vehicle was extremely difficult to steer and nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel if the truck was not in motion. When it was safe to do so I pulled over to check if there was a power steering leak, which there was not, I restarted the truck and the power steering came back and the error messages were cleared, making it seem like it was an electrical issue. I luckily was able to control the truck and not crash, if my wife was driving I do not believe she would have been able to steer the truck.

One morning I started my truck to go to work and the engine started ticking when I arrived at work the engine was still ticking . Being a European Automotive Technician for 34 years I knew this was bad . I performed an extensive diagnosis of the engine and found metal particles in the oil and filter at that point I knew that something in the engine had failed . I removed the engine and removed the oil pan for further inspection and discovered that the # 2 cylinder piston was broken below the wrist pin.

The power steering failed while driving at highway speeds. I was able to steer, but it became very difficult. It made it very difficult to make turns when exiting the freeway. It has happened twice since I have owned the vehicle. I have not had it checked out by the dealership yet. It flashed a brief message to he affect of "Steering Assist is Reduced Drive with Care". Then what I believe to be the Stabilitrak symbol remained illuminated until I was able to pull off of the freeway and shut the truck off for a little while.
