Incident Report Vehicle Information: Year: 2016 Make: Chevrolet Model: Suburban I am experiencing a recurring issue with my 2016 Chevrolet Suburban involving the steering column lock module and the theft deterrent system. The truck intermittently fails to start, displaying a "Theft Deterrent" warning message on the dashboard and lighting get dim on the display. On some occasions, after waiting approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle starts, but other times it does not. Additionally, there are instances when the truck starts but cannot be shifted into gear. To address the problem, I have attempted to disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the system, but this has not resolved the issue. The problem appears randomly and unpredictably, creating significant inconvenience and safety concerns, particularly in situations where I am stranded or unable to move the vehicle. Impact on Safety: This issue poses a risk to my safety and the safety of others. The inability to reliably start or move the vehicle could lead to dangerous situations, especially in emergencies or high-traffic areas. It is also concerning that the theft deterrent system may be malfunctioning, potentially leaving the vehicle vulnerable to unauthorized access. Resolution Attempts: Despite attempting to reset the system by disconnecting the battery, the issue persists. Online forums and anecdotal evidence suggest that this may be a common problem with the steering column lock module or related systems in this model. Request for Action: I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue as it appears to affect multiple owners of similar vehicles. A thorough review and possible recall or service bulletin could ensure the safety and reliability of affected vehicles.

I see that some 2016 Chevy Suburban's have recalls on this with brake issues. I checked to see if ours had a recall and it doesn't but I believe that it should as we have a serious safety issue with ours. We have had a couple of mechanics look over our brakes and lines and none can seem to find anything wrong, but it is very intermittent and we never know when the issue will start. Sometimes the Service Brake Assist light will flash on, but other times it will not. Basically we will be driving and sometimes it is very hard to get it to stop, some times the brake won't push down at all and sometimes it will push all the way to the floor. It seems like it will happen after the car has been driven over an hour, but sometimes not. It has happened first thing in the morning, but not very often. When you drive it in traffic or go to park it, it has been vary scary as it sometimes is very hard to get stopped before hitting something in front of you. It will make a ABS sound sometimes, but the only light that has ever come on is the Service Brake Assist..... I strongly believe this sounds similar to the recalls in this Vehicles history and believe that ours should have this recall. An this happens pretty often, but not all the time..... This had happened sometime in 2023, but it happens more often now. Thanks for any information, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2016 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN- Grant, MI
I had just slowed down to pull into work, stepped on the gas and the suburban started chugging. After pulling into a parking space I could no longer more forward in Drive. After shifting through all the gears, I no longer had reverse, and to move my vehicle off to the side for the tow company, I had to put it in Nuetral to go forward. I had no warning lights on the dash, no errors when a mechanic scanned it. It obviously needs a new 6L80 transmission, which I see a similar class action suit for. The only blessing is that, by chance, my kids were not in our family vehicle when the tranmission broke. I had driven them to and from school just hours earlier. And that I made it safely to work, not broken down on the side of any busy roads.

We purchased this vehicle from a local dealership (2/5/2024) and 25 days after purchasing it (3/1/2024) we had to have it towed as the torque converter and transmission went out and we could no longer drive it. This was quite costly at $6600.00.
