2018 FORD EDGE Complaints

In early 2023 I was driving on the highway and the engine shut down with a low coolant message on the dashboard. After a couple different trips to different mechanics, the local Ford dealer determined there was coolant intrusion in the engine block due to a cracked block. On approx 4/10/23 we ordered the vehicle to be fixed at a cost of $7329.04. Ford customer service was unwilling to help with the issue. This is a known issue among ecoboost Ford engines of this generation. So much so that there was a recall for the 1.5l engines(this is a 2.0l). We called Ford customer service who seemed like they were going to help at first but once the supervisor came on she told us she would not help and "if we truly cared about our vehicle we would have purchased an extended warranty". I personally know 4 other people who have been struck by the ecoboost bug and have had to replace their engines due to the coolant intrusion issue. This issue is a safety issue as the vehicle will shut down once it rears its head.

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed, and it was discovered that there was coolant intrusion into cylinder #2. The vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

First indication of an issue was when the check engine light illuminated (2/1/2024). I took car to an independent repair shop who identified the codes as PO304 - misfire cylinder 4 and P0316 - misfire on start up. Borescope revealed coolant leaking thru #4 cylinder wall & cylinder #1 showing stream of coolant from cylinder head gasket. Ford TSB recommends long block engine replacement due to coolant intrusion in the engine. The car remained parked from 2/2/24 to 3/13/2024. 3/13/2024. On 3/13 I took the car to the local Ford dealership whose service department confirmed the original diagnosis. Safety issue - coolant intrusion into the combustion chamber could induce an engine fire or cause the engine to seize up while being driven. The car is still at the Ford dealership. The mileage when the CELcame on was 72944 miles. Current mileage approximately 72960. Toatal cost to repaired quoted at $ 9,110.01.

2018 Ford Edge purched certified pre-owned in Novemeber 2023. In February, engine light displayed after diagnostic was ran, we were told that there is a coolant intrusion and we would need to replace the entire engine, approximately $8k. Ford Autonation, Valencia and Ford customer service directed us to contact you so we can report the coolant issue which is a known recall for Ford Edge. The VIN number doesn't fall within the recalled models, but since our vehicle is having the same issue, Ford told us to report this issue to you so that the VIN or Factory can be included in the recall. The contact's wife owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated while his wife was driving 65 MPH, the message "Engine Hot" was displayed and the vehicle was overheating. The contact's wife pulled to the side of the road and allowed the engine to cool down. The contact stated that his wife turned on the hazard lights and drove to the nearby residence at slow speeds. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was coolant intrusion in the engine. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 70,642.

The heating in the car was not working. Then one morning the car started overheating and the check engine light came on. Taken to dealer to find the coolant was low and that it was leaking into cylinders 2 and 3 and now the engine needed to be replaced. This is an $8000 plus repair on a car I just bought for $20000 with under 75000 miles.

The contact self-diagnosed the vehicle and retrieved DTC Code: P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected). The contact replaced the ignition coils; however, the failure recurred with the engine coolant overheating message displayed. Upon inspection, the contact discovered the engine coolant was low and there was coolant intrusion into the engine. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The contact was advised to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to the dealer for regular tire maintenance, he was informed that the lug nuts were defective. The contact stated that it was suggested that the lug nuts be cut off and replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 110,000.
