2013 FORD ESCAPE Complaints

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated while reversing out of the driveway and attempting to turn out of the driveway, the steering wheel locked up preventing the vehicle from turning. The contact shifted the vehicle into PARK and restarted the vehicle and the steering wheel unlocked. The contact was able to drive the vehicle however, several days later while driving at an undisclosed speed, the failure recurred, and the steering wheel locked. The contact was able to manually pull the vehicle over to the side of the road and restart the vehicle to unlock the steering wheel. The power steering assists warning light was illuminated during the failure. The local dealer went to the residence and picked up the vehicle to perform a diagnostic test. The mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering assist fault message was illuminated, and the vehicle lost power steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with power steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the defect and directed the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.

The water pump is leaking which is causing residual issues with the timing. I don't know enough about engines to know for certain how severe the safety concern is with this, but I felt negligent to not report it. The problem has been reviewed by a garage and an independent mechanic. It has not been inspected by insurance or police. The warning light only came on after the leak almost completely drained the coolant.

Check engine light soon light appeared in the morning. When accelerating up a steep incline, the engine temperature rose to the level of overheating within ~30 seconds and displayed the pull over immediately warning. At this time the engine began to emit a burning smell The check engine light went off but when I took the vehicle to a garage the next day, they were able to pull code P26B7, related to the engine coolant bypass. There is a TSB 13-2-15 related to this issue. The vehicle has less then 38,000 miles on it

After warmup, engine stalls at stop. It restarts, but intermittently stalls again at stop/go or when slowing down.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that she had initially observed spots on her driveway due to an unknown leak. The contact had taken the vehicle to several independent mechanics however, none of the mechanics could find the source of the leak. The contact stated that while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle began to shake with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact had discovered that the coolant reservoir was empty. While refilling the coolant reservoir, the coolant spilled out of the vehicle. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to her residence. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 12V551000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) which she linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed her that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was provided a case number and was referred to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

While leaving the grocery store, my 2013 Ford Escape S, when I started it showed the fault “Steering assist fault service required”. The steering wheel was hard to turn, so I turned the car off and restarted the car. The message was gone and my car’s steering was back to normal. I called the Ford dealership and told them about the problem and they said there is no recall for this problem. My car has barely 64K miles on the odometer. I’ve read many customer complaints about this issue and Ford has done nothing about this. This is a safety concern regarding the loss of power steering and could possibly cause someone to have an accident or even kill someone. I don’t wanna spend thousands of dollars to repair something that should be recalled and be fixed by Ford free of charge.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that as her daughter attempted to place the gear shifter into reverse, the gear shifter seized between reverse and neutral. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact's daughter called a tow truck and had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V471000 (Power Train). The contact then had the vehicle towed to a dealer where she was informed that her vehicle was not included in the recall. Don's Ford (5712 Horatio St, Utica, NY 13502) was also called and confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic where it remained in their possession unrepaired. The failure mileage was 110,000.

The contact's cousin owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that his cousin informed him that the vehicle was overheating and leaking antifreeze after parking the vehicle. The contact, an independent mechanic, performed a pressure test and noticed there was antifreeze leaking from a hole in the cylinder head. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was made aware of the failure but did not diagnose the vehicle. The dealer gave the contact a printout of a possible failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 151,058.

We have constant issues with the coolant system and finally a mechanic said that what was wrong was actually a recalled item. There was localized overheating of the engine cylinder head which caused a crack in the head/ gasket and is allowing oil/ coolant to leak internally. We then took it to out local Ford dealership, they confirmed the problem and that it would have been covered under USANHTSA recall # 13V583000, EXCEPT that there was an "inspection" done and "no leaks were found at this time". We are questioning the inspection/ remedy since the EXACT problem stated in the recall happened.
