2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Alternator shorted and/or failed diode causing a fire under the hood. Started the vehicle and heard a strange noise from under the hood. Turned the vehicle off and opened the hood. Upon opening the hood smoke bellowed out. I could see an electrical component inside the alternator glowing red. The component glowed red and smoked until the battery was completely drained. While the vehicle didn't start on fire if it had this could have caused a large amount of damage as at the time of the incident the vehicle was parked inside a airport parking garage. Jeep has a recall for 2012 - 2014 models. The 2011 model year needs to be added to the recall. The failed alternator is available for inspection. The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while pulling into a parking space with the foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration causing the driver to lose control of the steering wheel and crashed into a building. During the crash the air bag deployed and the driver sustained injuries to the head back and neck which required medical treatment. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 66,000.

I had repeated engine stalling issues, usually when accelerating, but other times just randomly. The problem is usually momentary, the engine starts running again in seconds. It is also infrequent, only once or twice a month for a vehicle being driven daily. This has caused some very near misses when the vehicle behind me doesn't notice my sudden deceleration (there are no brake lights) and almost rear ends me. Fortunately I have not had any accidents. This was a problem on my 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee VIN 1J8HR58T99C520366. A bad crankshaft position sensor wire in the harness was finally found and replaced which fixed the problem. The problem is very hard for the repair shop to verify, they won't take the vehicle out on the road and drive it long enough so it is hard to even convince them it is a real problem. The shops often attribute it to a bad fuel pump relay, a well known problem with recalls. The replacement relays have very limited availability. I have had to drive on a suspected bad relay for months before recall parts are available. I don't think the relay is the only defect which causes the problem. About 6 weeks ago my 2011 started exhibiting the problem again, but this time with more frequency and more dramatic engine out episodes. The dealer attributed it to the fuel pump relay, which they didn't have, then to a timing sensor (crankshaft I think) then to various other problems including corroded ECM connector pins which were replaced but didn't fix the problem. After 4 weeks in the shop they finally found a bad wire (which connects the suspect timing sensor) inside a wiring harness. The wire was replaced and the problem went away. That is one of the problems that was discovered on my 2009 model! That coincidence can't be explained as a random failures, there has to be a wiring harness issue.

My paint on the roof of my Jeep Grand Cherokee started bubbling and visible rust started appearing. After about a month my windshield cracked all the way across starting from where the rust made the paint bubble, this is the only part of the vehicle with any rust. I had USAA send Safelite to come repair my windshield and what I thought was minor rust damage. To my horror the damage from the bad paint/seal was extensive and the windshield can’t be replaced until the body of the Jeep is fixed. The windshield needing replaced is the original from the factory no part of my Jeep has ever been replaced, the only reason it needs to be fixed is because of the faulty paint/seal. I now have no windshield or drivable car. I have reached out and there are quite a few Jeep owners that experienced this same issue in the same exact location. It is now being held on by tape so there isn’t just a huge hole in the car. The day it cracked the vehicle had not left my driveway, but now my car is not in a state to drive anywhere. Also in outside temperatures exceeding 80 the seat belt warning light and air bag light come on, sometimes it stays sometimes it goes away. However when the airbag light is on it prevents them from deploying in case of an incident which could cause more serious injury or death. I have three open recalls as well, I call Roberson Jeep of Salem in March of 2021, I have not heard anything about the parts being ready, I called in June 2021 about an update and they have not started my claim.

2011 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ALTERNATOR SAFETY RECALL. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE THAT THE ALTERNATOR SAFETY COVERS IN THE MODEL YEAR 2012 VEHICLE BUT, THE RECALL WAS NOT EXTENDED TO THE MODEL YEAR 2011. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED.

While driving, an electric fire started in my Jeep due to a vanity lamp short (NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V879000) which is a known issue: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) recalled certain model year 2011-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured December 3, 2009, to September 1, 2012. "In the affected vehicles, the wiring for the vanity lamp in the sun visor may short circuit, after having been remedied for a prior recall for the vanity lamp wiring." I had this recall completed in November of 2017, which was confirmed by the manufacturer during my phone conversation today. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. My safety and others was at extreme risk as I was driving when this fire occurred above my head and I had to quickly pull over and exit my vehicle in a very busy area. There was also melting material dripping from the visor that nearly reached me in the driver's seat, but thankfully I was able to move out of the way and it melted my driver seat instead (as shown in picture). The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle has not been inspected yet by the manufacturer or insurance representatives or any others, it is at the Jeep dealership and I am waiting to hear back from the manufacturer on next steps for the extensive damage before anything is done.

My vehicle has been leaking transmission fluid, this has caused shifting problems as well as ac problems i have done hours of research and its seems to be a common problem with 2011 jeep cherokee and i feel this need to be investigated! From what Ive read there seems to be welding issues and thats where the leaks are at. I have taken my vehicle for an inspection and the ac condensor needs to be replaced. I have taken for a second opinion and the same was discovered. After $750.00 later! I have grandchildren that i drive in this vehicle and am concerned about their safety as well as mine.
