2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Complaints

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the low power voltage and several unknown warning lights illuminated and went off. In addition, the red battery warning light remained illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the nearest parking lot and the vehicle was turned off. The contact stated that a nearby driver attempted to jumpstart the vehicle. The contact stated that while the nearby driver attempted to jumpstart the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to start. In addition, the contact inspected the vehicle and stated that the alternator appeared to be completely inoperable. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact purchased a new alternator and installed the new alternator. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle started. The contact stated that immediately after the replacement of the alternator, the new alternator started to burn out. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V435000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not associated. The dealer was made aware of the failure but did not assist. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 164,334.

The monostable shifter malfunctions constantly. Safety-related concerns include it not staying in park when parked, rolling has occurred; not being able to start due to it not actually being in park; it will switch gear while driving and vehicle will go into limp mode and shut off within seconds, then will not be able to restart. I cannot count on it starting or getting me anywhere safely and have towed multiple times now. The problem has unfortunately not been reproduced or realized by local dealership even with ‘service shifter’, ‘until you reach a desired location you may not be able to shift again NO BUS’, and engine light warning lights appearing when driven. It has been taken twice to John Hiester Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Sanford. (NC). I have spoken with Jeep Customer Care to no avail and the answer is take to a certified dealership but that option is proving to not be successful. I purchased in February 2025 but became disabled right after and haven’t realized it’s very major issues. Not being able to use my vehicle is quite isolating [XXX]. Engine and power train components show failure. Remanufactured 3.6 L pentastar engine camshaft journals and bearings show circumferential scoring from oil starvation. Rocker arm needle bearings failed shedding debris that clogged oil passages. Technician said root cause is oil pressure retention issue or internal contamination. Not caused by improper oil level but a design defect. Teardown report and photos available.

The contact stated that she had issues with cataracts and attributed the lack of illumination on the road to her condition. The contact stated that she avoided driving at night until she had to attend an event at night and asked her son to drive. The contact’s son also witnessed the lack of illumination on the roadway from the headlights. The contact stated that after returning to the residence, the contact’s son parked the vehicle facing a wall, and both observed that the passenger’s side headlamp was illuminating the driveway directly below and in front of the vehicle, and the driver's side headlight was illuminating the trees. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer, and the headlight assemblies were taken apart and then reinstalled and recalibrated. The contact stated that the dealer was unable to repair the headlights and stated that there was a fault in the headlamp assemblies that could not be repaired. The contact stated that the same dealer had replaced both headlamps in 2019 due to a failure to operate as needed. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,875.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and occupied, the contact became aware that the instrument panel was detaching from the vehicle. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. The instrument panel was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the deale,r where the same repairs were completed; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,400.

6 months ago, I was driving on the interstate and the ESC system light came on, the vehicle lost power/ability to accelerate, and would only allow acceleration after pulling over and restarting the car. This happened several more times on the interstate, and when the ESC system kicked in it would suddenly lurch the car down about 15 mph and leave no ability to accelerate, causing near collisions at high rates of speed. After eventually taking it to the dealership, it turned out to be failed lifters on the driver's side cam shaft, a known design issue that has apparently plagued the Pentastar engines. This all happened in spite of meticulous maintenance and no warning signs from the engine whatsoever. How is such a significant, known design defect that causes such dangerous driving conditions never been flagged for a recall?

Was getting ready to go to town, opened back seat for daughter to get into vehicle, and all of a sudden the front seat headrest popped out. Was very scary. Thankfully no one was in the front seat when it happened. I could only imagine there would have been some pain/injury sustained if they were. There were no warnings. No other malfunctions. Headrest is not able to be "clicked" back into place as a bracket is broken inside. There has not been any investigation by manufacturer, police or insurance reps.

We were driving this weekend and the headrest components failed and blew it apart. It shoved my husbands head forward really hard. We pulled over and tried to fix it but all the pieces are snapped inside of it. From our understanding that is a safety feature that is supposed to happen in a crash but we were not in a crash, just doing 55 mph down the road. It was not inspected by anyone yet but from reading online forums this seems to be a common occurrence.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 77,795, and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 196,000.
