2017 RAM 1500 Complaints

Engine started making a ticking sound approximately around Oct 15th 2023 Called ram cares because my 2008 chrysler aspen with 180k on the same 5.7 liter engine had the same sound and a private shop replaced. Lifters. Started escalation case number [XXX] on October 25th 2023. 2017 ram went to Larry Miller dealership, Boise, ID on Oct 30, 2023. Eric service manager says technician diagnosis was warped exhaust manifold and loose bolts. This is coming with the 5.7l hemi and they have replaced over 20 this year alone and with miles as low as 30,000 miles. Vehicle was brought in several times for loose headlights. Each time fastners were replaced. By dealership. Larry Miller boise, ID. Called ram cares they stated nothing was reported to them nor were there any recall. This is a major safety issue and on forums many people state they cannot pass state inspection because the headlights are falling out.

Tried to leave and the service power steering light came on and there was no power steering. We shut the truck off and started it again and the light went off and we had power steering again. This has happened on and off a few times which is consistent with the recall we were informed of. We brought our truck to the local repair shop and they told us that there is a recall for this very issue (see attached copy from them). We then contacted the Dodge dealership we purchased the truck from and was told that this is VIN number specific and that our VIN number was not included in this recall, however the recall is occurring with vehicles made between 2013-2019 and ours is a 2017. We also contacted Chrysler who told us the same thing.

The fuel tank's front support bracket completely rusted out. I was driving and started to hear a very loud grinding sound. The bracket gave way completely dropping the tank almost to the ground and pushing the fuel tank bracket into the drive shaft grinding into it. Luckily it didn't create a spark or wrap around the drive shaft. The fuel tank could've fallen down completely or a spark could've been created from the bracket and drive shaft hitting leading to a fire or worse. There are no other rust points like this on the truck. The brackets seem to be made from a thinner/weaker material which is prone to heavy rust. Vehicle has been in Kentucky most of its life and is only 6 years old. This issue could've led to me being seriously injured or killed. I am unaware if this problem has been reproduced but I am aware of a recall for the same issue on earlier model year trucks by RAM. The vehicle hasn't been inspected by anyone yet as it's the weekend but will be looked at at the start of the work week. There were no warning lights, symptoms or anything leading up to this failure. Everything was fine and then it just wasn't.

The contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 30-45 MPH, he smelled a burning odor. Additionally, the vehicle started sputtering and lost motive power. The low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs.
