2017 RAM 1500 Complaints

Having abs and traction control dash lights and no cruise control have replaced everything and now being told my HCU unit is the issue and parts are not available which to me is unbelievable due to being part of safety system and not part of recall according to Ram, this makes absolutely no sense to me.

To Whom It May Concern at NHTSA, I am filing this safety complaint regarding a defective ABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) on my 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel 4x4 5.7L Hemi, VIN: [XXX] , with approximately 88,000 miles. DEFECT DESCRIPTION: The ABS HCU has failed, resulting in complete loss of anti-lock braking, traction control, electronic stability control, and cruise control. This is an identical failure mode to the defect addressed under NHTSA Recall 24V-896, which covered 2017-2018 Ram 2500-5500 trucks. My 2017 Ram 1500 uses the same or substantially similar HCU component and is experiencing the identical failure. SAFETY RISK: The loss of ABS, ESC, and traction control significantly increases the risk of a crash, particularly in adverse weather conditions. This is not a minor inconvenience — it is a serious safety hazard that FCA/Stellantis has already acknowledged in heavier-duty Ram platforms. MANUFACTURER KNOWLEDGE: FCA was aware of this defect as early as 2016 based on warranty claims and customer complaints. Despite issuing Recall 24V-896 for heavier Ram trucks with the same HCU failure, FCA has failed to extend recall coverage to the 2017 Ram 1500, leaving thousands of owners without remedy. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Repair estimates range from $1,200 to $2,000. The part (OEM #XXX) remains on backorder or engineering hold, making timely repair impossible through normal channels. REQUESTED ACTION: I respectfully request that NHTSA: 1. Open a formal investigation into the 2017 Ram 1500 ABS HCU failure 2. Compel FCA/Stellantis to expand Recall 24V-896 or issue a new recall to include the 2017 Ram 1500 3. Require FCA to reimburse owners who have already paid for this repair out of pocket I am happy to provide any additional documentation, repair invoices, or diagnostic reports upon request. Vehicle reaches 50percent fuel level and drops to zero causing the operator to potentially run out of fuel. And disables remote start functionality. Also potentially run out of fuel at anytime and not being able to move vehicle to a safe location. Even the side of the road. Out of gas. Can not move at all. Dealership has replaced twice already the fuel level sensor. Multiple vehicles I’ve seen with this problem. Could leave someone in a dangerous situation.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Service Electronic Stability Control" was displayed. While investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was taken back to the residence, and the contact used an OBD reader to diagnose the vehicle. The contact determined that the tone wheel had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was confirmed that the tone wheel and the front passenger’s side axle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,520.

Vehicle is having the same issues it had before with soot and sludge build up in the engine that caused the EGR to fail and melt into the engine... I have all the parts that were replaced from the 1st time this happened and was not repaired properly and is now causing a catastrophic failure....

There has been a recall on the Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 series for the faulty ABS module. My 2017 Dodge 1500 is currently having the same issues and I am being charged full price plus labor to replace the same item. My truck has been at the dealership for over a month because due to the recall there is a nationwide shortage of parts. The truck is not drivable with faulty brakes/abs system and i am behind all the recalled vehicles that are getting the same service for free. How can the same item failure be recalled on one series and not another? Thank you

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated that extra effort was needed to maintain control of the vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. The dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 19E077000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

Timeline of issues: 04/11/2026 – Vehicle purchased 04/16/2026 – Brakes began grinding 04/18/2026 – Vehicle developed starting issues 04/19/2026 – Brake system parts (pads, rotors, calipers) ordered due to failure 04/23/2026 – Parts received; same day 4WD was tested and confirmed not functioning properly (dashboard indicates engagement but front wheels do not engage) 04/24/2026 – Complete brake failure occurred due to caliper failure These issues occurred immediately after purchase and indicate the vehicle had significant pre-existing mechanical defects at the time of sale. The 4WD system also does not function correctly despite indicating engagement, and the braking system failed completely shortly after purchase.

Steering has become hard and pulsates at times. Feels unsafe when turning at intersections. Steering issue is unpredictable and dangerous. (many other RAM 1500 drivers seem to have this issue per RAM forums). Fix is to replace entire rack and pinion system which is not acceptable. This is something that should last life of the vehicle. ~$4,000 fix is very hard to swallow.

While driving the Electric Power Steering Unit failed. would not steer. maneuvered vehicle to safe area; turned off vehicle; waiter about 5 minutes; vehicle started and steering reset to a usable steering. Drove home and parked. Next day started vehicle; steering would not work. This incident happened while driving. Hazardous to all around. In the past two months started vehicle and tried to steer with no results. Used a system diagnostic device to find codes--reported that EPS unit failure. Talked with dealership and Manufacturer, both stated that there was not a recall for the Vin in question. (Ref. NHTSA- Recall-----VB9-NHTSA-077). They both said the vin number was not in the recall. Vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or any other agency; only by current owner and family members. No warning of this happening was seen with this system failure prior to it happening. A message appeared in the dash system after this happened stating "check power steering"; not prior to the failure. No accident happened, no injuries occurred, no reports to police or insurance were made for this system failure. Contacted local dealership and manufacture of this failure, both stated this would be an "Out-Of-Pocket expense". Because of financial hardship, nothing has been done with this vehicle to date. It would require towing and repair of failure.
