2017 RAM 2500 Complaints

At less than 50K miles, the ABS braking and traction control system has failed compromising the safety of the driver, passengers and cargo.

ABS/ Traction Control lights constantly going on and off. Kicks off cruise control. Message blocks digital speedometer. Known issue, yet FCA will not recall.

Service Electronic Brake System came on while driving. Problem seems to be inconsistent and constantly turns on and off preventing ABS and traction control from working. Braking when the system is not working properly will result in massive feedback from the brake pedal.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at 30-35 MPH on a damp road and approaching a stop light, the brake pedal was depressed but the brakes locked, causing the vehicle to slide. The traction control and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated as he released the brake pedal and reapplied it slowly, the vehicle responded as needed. However, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with brake circuit failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related to NHTSA Action Number: PE22012 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

The brakes never have stopping power even with the exhaust brake. It take along time to stop at 30mph and if I'm going above 30 mph I'm afraid I will run into someone ahead of me if they put on their brakes.

Purchased truck used Fall 2021 with only 27k miles. After less than year and about 8k miles. ABS warning lights and sound randomly and erratically became an annoying problem. The cause is a defective Hydraulic Control Unit. Ram truck owners have posted hundreds if not thousands of complaints on the internet regarding this. Anyway, I had to disconnect the fuse for the ABS Module to prevent the annoying, interfering malfunction. The truck brakes safely but there is not the additional safety of the ABS system. The newer version of the Hydraulic Control Unit is not available and backordered until at least the end of January, 2023. Dodge Ram owners of these trucks can't even pay high dealer repair prices because no one has the part. I believe 2019 and newer models have the same problem but Ram has issued a recall for those model years.

Completed a hard stop, but ABS system did not appear to work correctly. Once stop was completed, had two malfunction lamps and a "service ABS warning". Lights and warning went away once I resumed driving. In a separate incident, I took off from a stop in wet conditions and the traction control system did not appear to be working, vehicle spun the rear tires an abnormal amount. Once this happened, the warning lights and error message returned, but went away upon further driving. I visited the dealer and had them pull the error code and it was "C0020-01-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL - GENERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE". There is an active technical bulletin stating the issue is with the hydraulic control unit (HCU). It appears to me that this problem disables the antilock brakes as well as the traction control system. The danger here is that the warning lamps and error messages go away, leading one to believe the system is functioning normal when in fact it is not. I was advised by the dealer that the replacement part is unavailable and could be for several months.

ABS/traction control intermediately functioned for several weeks. But is now inoperable.

The brake warning light flashed on and off irregularly. Took to the dealer but was told they couldn't diagnose it since the light was currently off. Months later the light was on when I took it for the annual State safety inspection. Diagnosed the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced. It took them a few weeks to get one in but it was finally completed at a cost to me of a little more than $1,000.
