Impossible to see with backup camera at night in a low-light area. It's like not having a camera. This was never a problem with my 2015 Volvo S60 and is not a problem with my wife's 2014 Volvo XC60. The problem is that the touchscreen/dashboard brightness needs to be lowered at night so that it's not too bright. Either the screen needs to get brighter, temporarily, when backing up at night or the camera needs to provide a brighter image. Previous Volvo backup camera implementations did not have this issue. Volvo has been aware of this problem and has no fix. This is a safety issue, i e., like not having a backup camera at night.

Message popped up “cameras temporarily unavailable” and backup and surround view cameras aren’t working. A quick google search and it seems to be a very common software problem

The backup camera on this model has serious reliability issues. It freezes while backing up, and frequently displays a "camera temporarily unavailable" message. Volvo attempted to improve the reliability with a software update this year, but it did very little. The fact that it displays the temporarily unavailable message reveals that Volvo clearly knows about the problem, and they think displaying this message is acceptable. The dealer service manager admits the problem is with the software, and has been discussed at length on internet forums. This car has terrible rear visibility, and a functioning backup camera is absolutely required for safe operation.

A medium rain caused water to enter the rear taillights and short out, causing malfunctions for both sides. The forums and Facebooks are littered with these post. It’s not off but when. It’s a poor design and safety hazard that is costing to repair.

I exclusively use one pedal drive (OPD) for my 2022 Volvo C40 EV. I have a log of about a dozen incidents in 2.5yrs where OPD has malfunctioned. Sometimes failing at speed, other times lurching quickly forward after stopping. I have contacted Volvo and they installed a flight data recorder. I can provide a description of all my events upon request. I'll detail just the most dangerous incident here: [XXX] ~[XXX] 30mph westbound on [XXX], Catonsville, MD. A car in front of me was stopping to make the same left turn I needed onto Harlem Ln. To prepare for the stop & turn I removed my foot from the accelerator pedal. Regen braking & deceleration began but then deceleration went to zero, or perhaps the car even sped up. I hit the brake pedal hard to avoid a collision. My wife said, "Why did you speed up?" Of course I didn't speed up, OPD malfunctioned.  Attempted to reproduce 27NOV at same location w/o the car in front. Could not reproduce. Was driving and my low coolant light came on. I pulled over and car shut down and coolant leaking all over the exhaust and block of the engine. Crack in the coolant bleeder hose leaving me stranded on the side of the road. I then googled the issue to my surprise it is the same crack point and part that the previous year 2016 model had a recall on for safety as this is a fire risk leaking on the exhaust and this being a flammable liquid. I am just upset as this was a recall for the previous year model and it is happening on the 2017 model with many other people having the same issue. Contacting Volvo and they will not cover this as there is no active recall on this $800 for a $23 part that is a known issue is a problem and the risk of my vehicle catching on fire when I have 5 children In the car is very concerning for a car that is suppose to be reliable. Not to mention the bad front strut problems on these that go out and send you going in the wrong direction on a bump. Hope this gets taken care of due to the risk!

  • 2024 VOLVO S60
    - Sophia, NC

The contact owns a 2024 Volvo S60. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, a message stating that the propulsion system was reduced was displayed, and the vehicle came to a complete stop in the middle of the road, nearly causing a crash. Additionally, the steering wheel seized, the gear shift indicator light turned off, and the four wheels seized while the engine continued to run. A Police Officer arrived at the scene and directed traffic to prevent a crash. The vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer, where it was diagnosed with fuel pump failure. The dealer replaced the fuel pump and informed the contact that the vehicle had been repaired. The contact informed the dealer that he felt unsafe driving the vehicle because the steering wheel and the wheel had seized while the engine was still running, which prevented the contact from pulling to the side of the road. The dealer informed the contact that no other failure was found and that the vehicle operated as designed. The dealer towed the vehicle to the residence, and the contact had not driven the vehicle since the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and of the safety concerns but advised the contact that the diagnostic report from the dealer only showed a failure with the fuel pump. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
