On August 9, 2026, at approximately 3:40 a.m., while driving, the vehicle suddenly lost all propulsion and became completely disabled on the roadway. The vehicle remained powered on but would not move forward or backward. At approximately the time of the failure, Cadillac/OnStar Advanced Diagnostics generated a critical Electric Drive Unit warning instructing immediate service and reported diagnostic code P0A78. Additional vehicle diagnostic warnings involved the electric drive unit/high-voltage propulsion system. I immediately contacted roadside assistance but was unable to obtain a workable towing solution for several hours. The vehicle ultimately had to be privately towed and has remained undriveable since the incident. The loss of propulsion occurred unexpectedly while the vehicle was being driven, without advance warning that would have allowed me to safely plan for the vehicle to become disabled. I am concerned that the same sudden loss of propulsion could occur at higher speed, in traffic, at an intersection, or in another location where an unexpected loss of motive power could create a serious crash risk. The vehicle requires diagnosis and repair for the Electric Drive Unit/P0A78 condition.

    - Downers Grove, IL

The engine/powertrain malfunctioned on my 2023 Cadillac Escalade at approximately 29,434 miles, ultimately requiring complete engine replacement. During the engine repair, the Cadillac technician also discovered that the transmission cooler lines were leaking fluid. The dealership replaced all of the affected transmission cooler lines as part of the repair. The original failed engine was removed by the Cadillac dealership, so I do not know whether GM/Cadillac retained it. The failure involved the vehicle’s engine and created concern about the possibility of sudden loss of propulsion or engine failure while driving. Because this is a large vehicle routinely operated on public roads and highways, an unexpected loss of engine power could significantly reduce my ability to safely accelerate, merge, or move the vehicle out of traffic. Fortunately, I brought the vehicle in for service after noticing the abnormal engine noise before a complete failure occurred while driving. Yes. Heritage Cadillac inspected and diagnosed the vehicle. The dealership documented my complaint of a “weird noise on start up” that continued until approximately 10 MPH. The technician removed the valve covers and inspected the rocker arms and pushrods. The dealership ultimately determined that an engine replacement was necessary and replaced the engine under warranty. Yes. The vehicle was inspected and repaired by Heritage Cadillac, an authorized Cadillac dealership. The dealership diagnosed the engine issue and replaced the complete engine. During the repair process, the technician also discovered leaking transmission cooler lines. I did not receive a warning lamp or dashboard message alerting me to an engine problem. The primary symptom was an abnormal engine noise shortly after startup that continued during initial acceleration to approximately 10 MPH. This prompted me to bring the vehicle to Heritage Cadillac for inspection. The dealer documented this symptom on the repair order.

  • 2023 CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV
    - Franklin Sq , NY

Dear NHTSA Vehicle Safety, I would like to report a recurring safety issue involving the instrument cluster in my 2023 Cadillac Escalade ESV. Vehicle: 2023 Cadillac Escalade ESV VIN: [XXX] Current Mileage: Approximately 170,000 miles The digital instrument cluster/display directly behind the steering wheel intermittently goes completely black while the vehicle is in operation. When this occurs, I lose visibility of the speedometer, odometer, warning information, and other important driver information. The center navigation/infotainment display can remain operational while the driver’s instrument cluster is completely black. This condition originally began before the vehicle reached 70,000 miles. Initially, it occurred only occasionally and the instrument cluster would eventually turn back on by itself. The problem has progressively worsened and, particularly after approximately 120,000miles, the blackouts have become considerably more frequent. The vehicle has been brought to a Cadillac dealership. I was advised that insufficient battery power could be causing the problem. The battery was replaced and the vehicle software was updated. However, the instrument cluster continues to intermittently go completely black. The dealer has now indicated that the complete instrument cluster may need to be replaced. I am reporting this condition because I believe the sudden loss of the speedometer and other critical driver information while operating the vehicle presents a potential safety concern. I respectfully request that NHTSA document this complaint and review whether similar instrument cluster/display failures have been reported by other owners of 2021–2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV vehicles and whether further investigation may be appropriate. Thank you for reviewing this safety complaint. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On XXX I had been driving my vehicle with no issues. I had drove from [XXX] to [XXX]. My vehicle had no warnings or issues prior and my vehicle has been properly cared for and all oil and maintenance has been done through the Cadillac dealership in [XXX]. On my way to [XXX] I stopped at the local gas station and filled my gas tank fully up, when I started my vehicle there was a horrible sound and my car began to shake and all the electronics began coming up. I went to work less than 5 minutes down the road and the vehicle was horrible acting. I called my husband and began thinking maybe I had put bad gas in the vehicle because like i mentioned earlier there was nothing wrong with my vehicle prior to this. We contacted the dealership in [XXX] and they told us to bring the vehicle in, I had to drive my car back to [XXX] where i was petrified my vehicle was going to blow up or just die in the road. I made it to the dealership and explained what happened and that i thought it was bad gas, they let me know they would look at the vehicle and let us know. They contacted my husband later in the day and let him know the good news was that it was not bad gas, unfortunately my engine blew up. He said my engine has done what the recall engines have been doing, unfortunately my vehicle is not in the recall and that it would be $12,000.00 to fix it. When my husband called me, I had him three way the dealership and explained we have taken very good care of our vehicle with all maintenance and oil changes done there. He explained to me that it was nothing we could have done and i wanted to know why then the engine blew without warning and he continued to explain it was like the other vehicles in a recall. He kindly explained that there was nothing he could do but we could try and contact GM if we could get ahold of them and we could file a complaint reguarding our vehicle. I was driving on the freeway and was between two cars. The car on my right was trying to merge into me. I immediately was breaking while trying to control steering. I attempted to honk three times and my honk horn would not work. In a case of an emergency, that is absolutely unacceptable a car like this should be able to honk.

  • 2014 CADILLAC ATS
    - Katy, TX

My 2014 Cadillac ATS experienced a transmission shift cable/linkage failure. After driving normally, I pulled into my garage and moved the shifter to Park. The physical shifter was in Park, but the instrument cluster continued to indicate Drive (D). The vehicle would not recognize Park, the shifter became stuck, and the vehicle would not restart because the transmission was still being detected as being in Drive. The vehicle was towed to an authorized Cadillac dealership for diagnosis. The dealership confirmed that the range selector lever cable had detached from the shift shaft. Their written diagnosis states that the plastic retainers securing the cable failed, causing the shifter to show the wrong drive mode. The dealer recommended replacement of the range selector lever cable. I later learned that this vehicle was previously subject to GM Safety Recall 14179 / NHTSA Recall 14V-338 concerning the automatic transmission shift cable. GM records show the recall was completed in 2014 through inspection; I was informed that no replacement part was installed at that time because none was required. I am reporting this because the vehicle has now experienced a shift cable/linkage detachment that appears similar to the failure condition addressed by that recall. This created a safety concern because the physical shifter position did not correspond with the transmission gear indicated/engaged, and the vehicle could not reliably be placed in Park. The vehicle and failed condition have been inspected and documented by an authorized Cadillac dealership. Dealer documentation and video of the diagnosis are available.
