2022 CHEVROLET COLORADO Complaints

While driving our 2022 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 (VIN: [XXX]) through an active roadway intersection at approximately midnight, the vehicle experienced a sudden, uncommanded complete loss of motive power and stalled without advance warning. Our teenage daughter was driving, making the abrupt loss of power, steering assist, and vehicle control in live traffic especially dangerous for an inexperienced driver. The stalled truck had to be physically pushed out of active traffic lanes into a nearby gas station for safety and has required flatbed towing for all subsequent transport. In the days prior to failure, an intermittent, unidentifiable mechanical odor was noticed, but zero warning lamps, dashboard messages, or diagnostic trouble codes were displayed, and the vehicle drove normally until the sudden shutdown. At the scene, an OBD-II diagnostic scan pulled DTC P0019-00 (Crankshaft Position - Exhaust Camshaft Position Not Plausible Bank 2). An independent service center subsequently confirmed adequate, safe oil levels (ruling out oil starvation), and independent technicians confirmed catastrophic internal engine failure. The truck is currently at an authorized Chevrolet dealership undergoing formal diagnostics to determine the exact internal failure mechanism (including potential correlation to known bearing/valvetrain defect patterns under GM Bulletin 19-NA-256). While driving on the freeway, I experienced a sudden issue with the vehicle’s braking system. The brake pedal became extremely stiff and difficult to press, and the brake assist stopped functioning. I was still able to apply the brakes, but it required significantly more force than normal to slow and stop the vehicle. Prior to this incident, I had also noticed an issue where the engine did not shut off normally after removing the key. The engine continued running briefly before shutting off with a noticeable rumble/shudder. I do not know whether the two issues are related, but I am including this information because it occurred before the brake-assist failure and may be relevant to diagnosing the vehicle.

Loss of power steering, Truck repaired by GM dealer, he stated it was the same failure mode described in Recall notice N2023254 10. The repair even though the same as the previous failures was not covered by GM because my VIN was not in GMs recall notice. Looking at this website there a number of reports of power steering failures for later model Colorado and Canyons that were not covered by the recall. Either GMs fix was not effective, or they did not select the right VIN population. So the Power steering failure repair on my truck even though it is the same failure mode as the previous recall was not covered by GM.

Component that failed: brakes. I was pulling into a parking spot at low speed and the brake pedal was suddenly extremely difficult to depress, almost impossible. It felt as if a brick were under the pedal but there was no obstruction. I was able to stop only because I was already going so slow. Safety of myself and others was at risk because I was almost unable to stop the vehicle. If I had been going any faster I don't believe I would have been able to without crashing into an obstacle. Vehicle is currently at a service shop but issue has not been verified or repaired as of today. When restarting the vehicle, the engine stuttered and started making odd sounds, and wouldn't idle properly. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms at all prior to failure. When I entered the parking lot it was working normally and when I turned to enter a parking spot the brakes suddenly just failed.

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while parking the vehicle, it was difficult to remove the key from ignition switch. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was a recurring failure. The dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that parts were on a national back order. The manufacturer was not made aware of failure. The failure mileage was 23,750.

key will not release from ignition. I will put the truck in park but the computer will not read that it is in park, so the key can only be rotated to the accessory position. This has been confirmed by the dealership. No codes are coming up nor any lights on the dash.

Issue 1: Cooling Fan Remained On After Engine Shutdown Component or system involved: Engine cooling system and fan control system, including the radiator cooling fan, fan relay, coolant temperature sensor, wiring, or engine control module (ECM). The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. What happened: After turning off the engine, the radiator cooling fan remained running continuously for approximately five minutes and would not shut off as expected. No warning light, message, or other dashboard indication appeared before or during the event. This was unusual behavior compared with normal operation. Safety risk: The unexpected fan operation created concern that the cooling system was malfunctioning and that the vehicle could overheat, experience an electrical problem, or become unreliable while driving. A cooling system or electrical failure while in traffic could put me and other drivers at risk. Reproduction or confirmation: The issue occurred several time and was confirmed by a Chevrolet dealer, and was told that my warranty did not cover the issue. I took it to outside mechanic to fix the issue as Chevrolet wanted to charge over $1500 for the issue. No warning lamps, messages, overheating indicators, or other symptoms appeared before the fan remained on. The problem occurred suddenly back in 2025. Issue 2: Ignition Key Gets Stuck and Cannot Be Removed Ignition lock cylinder, ignition switch, transmission shift-interlock system, park-position switch, or steering column lock mechanism. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The ignition key intermittently becomes stuck and cannot be removed from the ignition. The problem occurs after parking and turning the vehicle off, and I sometimes need to move the shifter or steering wheel repeatedly before the key can be removed. A stuck ignition key can prevent me from properly shutting down and securing the vehicle. It may also indicate a failure in the ignition or shift-interlock system.

When turning off the vehicle the key gets stuck in the ignition. I have to keep turning the vehicle several times and keep moving the shifter to get it to release at least 4 to six times before the key comes out. This happens daily. It started in May and continues to be a daily happening.

I was driving down a street, stopped for an accident that the police where directing traffic for, went passed the 2 officers, put my indicator light on to turn into Dunkin Donuts and stepped on the brakes and they failed. I was lucky there was an incline and no one behind me, I was able to drive up the incline and use my emergency brakes to slow and stop the car before going over the top and down the other side. I called the tow truck and was towed to my auto shop where is was discovered, my car suffered a catastrophic brake failure. Thank goodness I was not on my usual route with my special needs son and wasn't going to fast. This is a known failure of the brake vacuum booster pump and this damaged my camshaft and timing chain and cost a fortune on a car barely out of warranty. This would have been a death sentence for me and my son if I had been on a highway, as well as other people on the highway, if I wasn't able to stop for construction, someone cutting in front of me or any other incident on the road. This is NOT acceptable and these vehicles should be recalled!!!!! I am not the only one that has been through this since 2014 TERRIBLE-recall this part before someone dies, like they did in VA with the bus. I also had to rent a car during the repairs so I could get my son to his activities. This whole incident that should have been covered under a recall has caused my son to have PTSD with this vehicle.

My key was getting stuck in the ignition back in 2024 and the dealership replaced my shifter assembly. I am now having the same issue later after 2 years and I am out of warranty and now having to pay out of pocket. My sister has the same truck, year and color and had hers replaced. Also the service advisor said they’ve had two others come in with the same truck and had the same issue. I am unable to remove my key for quite some time once it gets stuck and I called Chevrolet themselves and they are telling me there is nothing they can do.
