While driving my truck it suddenly lost power. The truck had been operating normally with no prior issues before it shut off without warning. The truck was towed to a local dealer where they later told me the engine had seized up and needed to be replaced. The truck is a 2024 model that I had purchased new two months earlier. It only had 4,533 miles on it. I was driving at highway speeds and had to coast into a gas station parking lot. I was able to coast to safety, but losing power at highway speeds certainly increases the chance of having an accident.

While driving, I was starting to move following being stopped at a stop light and the truck experienced a complete engine seizure. I had it towed to the dealership I purchased the vehicle at and after a day or two, they indicated that GM's recommended fix to this particular issue was a complete engine replacement. The engine replacement couldn't be scheduled in a reasonable time. Grant it that the repair would have been covered under warranty and they would provide me a rental until such time it could be fixed, I decided to trade the vehicle in on an equivalent 2024 model (same truck 2 years newer) after being assured that it was an isolated incident and not part of a systemic problem. I only am writing this since I read an article the other day indicating that the NHTSA was launching a potential investigation into the same issue based on 39 complaints, at that time, regarding the GMC's 6.2L V8 small block engine. I wanted to let your organization know of my issue as well since I would assume that there are far more than 39 people/owners that had experience this problem. At a minimum, I make 40. In addition, I am now concerned about my 2024 GMC since it has the same motor in it. The article mentioned that there has not been injuries associated with the engine seizure. This is not surprising to me. It actually happened twice in my 2022; the first time in my driveway and another on the road. Note, after sitting for a couple of days in my driveway, it had started right up. I went for a ride to test it out and that is when the final instance happened. Both instances occurred when the auto off feature was engaged and only seized when trying to move from the auto "off" position back onto the "on" (engine running) position so I was not moving in either instance. Again, I am not concerned that this issue will arise in my new vehicle.

  • 2023 GMC SIERRA 1500
    - Hailey, ID

On [XXX], in the middle of a 600 mile road trip from Idaho to Southern Nevada, the engine failed in our 2023 GMC Sierra with just 23,060 miles on the odometer. We stopped for fuel and upon restarting the engine to continue on our trip, the engine was making a harsh metal on metal knocking. We called for a tow instead of driving further. The truck was towed 242 miles to the nearest dealership (GM Roadside refused to do the tow since it was 42 miles outside of their limit) by our AAA membership. The dealership in Las Vegas took 5-1/2 weeks to look at the truck to determine what had failed. They pulled the oil pan and found that the rod bearings for the #1 and #2 rods had failed. If we had continued on, the rods would have seized and would have lost power to the brakes and steering. It's been nearly three months now, and we have no resolution from GM. They have agreed to a "repurchase" on the truck, but we have not been able to get any details on the buy-back for over three weeks. We are still waiting. Due to the failure, the vehicle was initially towed to a dealer but was later towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic performed a diagnostic test and diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure. The vehicle remained in the possession of the independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

We purchased a new 2021 GMC Yukon Denali in July 2021.We have had continuous issues with the truck starting almost immediately after we purchased it and ending with a catastrophic engine failure despite only have ~81,000 miles on it. Even more concerning is that the engine failed while my two of my children were driving with 3 of their friends. The car seized up in the middle of a busy road while driving 55 mph. The kids had to coast to the side of a busy road where they exited the vehicle and waited for a tow truck. Despite regular oil changes and maintenance, we have experienced non-stop problems with the truck * Aug 2022 (29,470 miles): Engine wire chaffing relating to the fuel pressure sensor. Transmission slipping. * Oct 2022 (34,220 miles): “Grinding noises” related to brakes. Faulty brake sensor and brake replacement. * Nov 2022 (35,954 miles): Continued “grinding noises” * May 2023 (51,163 miles): Continued “grinding noises” which were again “shrugged off” by the dealership despite us bringing in the truck for the 3rd time related to this issue. Transmission slipping (transmission torn down, clutch assembly replaced, etc.) * Oct 2023 (62,365 miles): Continued “grinding noises” (4th time bringing the truck in for this reason). * Sep 2024 (81,000 miles): Catastrophic engine failure while driving on a busy road at 55 mph. Based on discussions with a wide range of mechanics, dealerships, shops, individuals within the automative industry, we have come to understand that the issues we have been facing with our truck are not unique. To be clear, we have experienced: i) the same problem repeatedly over a short period of time; ii) repeated unsuccessful attempts to fix the same issues; iii) a prolonged period for repairs where we did not have the vehicle; and iv) significant value loss due to catastrophic engine failure. Further, these problems compromised the safety of my family and has significantly disrupted our life.
