Following a routine oil and filter service and starter motor replacement at an authorized Land Rover dealer, the engine seized within 21 miles of vehicle delivery. The vehicle was brought to the dealer for a no-start condition. A prior independent shop had evaluated the vehicle and found exclusively electrical issues — no engine, fluid, or cooling concerns. The dealer performed a multi-point inspection confirming no fluid leaks and no engine concerns. The dealer then performed an oil and filter service and starter motor replacement. The dealer's own technician notes state the vehicle was started and the concern was confirmed rectified. One mile was driven across nine days of service. Fourteen minutes after taking delivery, warning lights appeared. The following morning, a RED Engine Overheating warning illuminated. The engine seized shortly thereafter, rendering the vehicle inoperable on a public road. The dealer confirmed in writing: spun bearing, rod knock, and metal shavings throughout the engine. The dealer's Service Manager also confirmed in writing that drained oil is not examined for metal contamination as part of their standard oil change procedure. A bearing in pre-failure condition sheds metal particulate into engine oil. This metal contamination would have been detectable in the drained oil had it been examined. The vehicle is currently inoperable and in the dealer's custody. The component is available for inspection upon request. Warning lamps appeared 14 minutes post-delivery. No warning lamps were present before the service visit. Problem has been confirmed by the dealer.

When using my parking assist feature for the first time the vehicle malfunctioned causing me to hit the car that I was trying to park in front of. The park assist took over when I engaged it but accelerated and hit the care without warning. I happened so quickly that I could not apply the brake until it was too late. There were 4 of us in the car at the time and were all shocked. Luckily no one was injured but it was definitely a possibility and there was damage to both vehicles. The police were called but did only did an information exchange form. I tried the feature the next day in an empty parking lot and again the back up speed was noted to be too fast. I took it to the dealer the following Monday and they said the computer showed no malfunction but they did agree that one of the sensors should have warned me and that the speed is set too high. They said that it is not something that they can adjust however and urged me to reach out to Land Rover’s customer service. Land Rover customer service told me to fill out this form. My insurance agent told me that this is their 3rd claim in a month with this issue. The dealer told me that they do not tell people that they have this parking assist feature because it is an issue. Why is not one addressing it then?!

  • 2018 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY
    - New Canaan, CT

Shortly after I purchased this used 2018 Land Rover Discovery with approximately 30,700 miles, the vehicle began intermittently lurching, surging and shaking during normal driving. These symptoms began before the check-engine light illuminated. Two days after the check-engine light first appeared, the lurching and surging became noticeably worse. Approximately two minutes before the first engine shutdown, numerous warnings appeared in rapid succession, including “Stability Control Not Available,” “Forward Alert Not Available,” “AEB Not Available,” and “ATPC Not Available.” I stopped the vehicle briefly. Approximately one minute after resuming driving, the engine unexpectedly shut off and the vehicle remained disabled for approximately 30 seconds before restarting. The abrupt loss of propulsion nearly caused the vehicle behind me to collide with the rear of my vehicle. During the second incident, the engine suddenly shut off while I was making a left turn through a four-way intersection. The vehicle became immobilized in the middle of the intersection, directly exposed to opposing oncoming traffic, and would not restart for approximately one minute. The sudden loss of propulsion mid-turn created an immediate risk of a serious collision. An independent OBD-II scan documented code P0456 simultaneously as stored, pending and permanent, as well as P0170 as a permanent diagnostic code. The selling dealership collected the vehicle because it could not safely be driven back, and the vehicle is currently available for inspection. There was no crash, fire or physical injury. I am reporting a potential safety defect involving repeated unexpected engine shutdown, loss of propulsion and multiple simultaneous system failures.

Airbag warning light is ON. Dealer states that this is caused by the wire harness under the seat getting caught when seat moves and breaks the wire continuity. Dealer states that several of these incidents have been observed in many vehicles as the harness design is prone to being trapped in the seat movement mechanism. Dealer states that the passenger side Airbag will NOT deploy if harness not replaced. Dealer states that this Airbag fault is not currently part of the known Airbag recall as that recall is for the driver side Airbag fault due to corroded terminals.

My vehicle is subject to open recall N627 regarding the crankcase ventilation assembly. I brought the vehicle to my authorized dealer to have this recall performed. The dealer confirmed the recall applies to my vehicle but informed me that the required replacement part has been on backorder and unavailable for approximately 4 months. As a result, the recall repair has not been completed and my vehicle remains in an unrepaired, potentially unsafe condition. I am filing this complaint because the manufacturer has failed to make the remedy part available within a reasonable time, leaving an open safety recall unresolved for an extended period. I am requesting that NHTSA look into the delay in parts availability for this recall and press the manufacturer for a timely resolution. DRL Halo failure/driver side: I own a business, and am on the road driving throughout the day. I have had at least 3 incidents where other drivers have pulled out in front of me, in which I believe was due to the DLR Halo failure. I was also stopped by a Traffic Officer because he thought it was a full 'headlight' failure. I had to explain to him that the DLR Halo failure is a KNOWN issue to Land Rover and that the core headlight still works. Safety Issues: Reduced Visibility: DRLs make your vehicle easier for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists to see during daylight hours, especially in overcast weather or glare conditions. A daytime running light (DRL) failure on a vehicle like the Land Rover Defender primarily reduces your truck's daytime visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a collision. Stats: Daytime running lights (DRLs) reduce multi-vehicle daytime traffic accidents by about 5% to 15%, depending on the specific study and crash type.Key Reduction StatisticsGeneral Multi-Vehicle Crashes: A major meta-analysis shows a 10% to 15% reduction in multi-party daytime accidents for cars using DRLs. A Monash University study found an 8.8% reduction in non-nighttime multi-vehicle crashes.Head-On and Opposite-Direction Collisions: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that DRLs reduce opposite-direction daytime fatal and non-fatal crashes by 5%.Vulnerable Road Users: NHTSA data indicates a 12% reduction in daytime pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities in single-vehicle crashes, and a 23% reduction in daytime fatal crashes between a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle.Specific Fleet/Manufacturer Studies: General Motors and independent evaluations typically estimate a general crash reduction of over 5% in urban and mixed environments. While I am driving a 2022 Defender with a DLR Halo defect, Land rover is directly putting me at 5 to 15% greater risk of injury, SBI injury or death.

Our 2020 Defender's halo light on the driver's side has become inoperable & poses a safety hazard. After researching this issue, it appears that this has been reported widely online. This malfunctioning halo light renders overall lighting very dim at night, creating a safety hazard for my vehicle & other drivers on the road. While looking online this is a rampant problem with this model, with the dealers wanting to charge & exorbitant cost of $4K+ I am writing to request that the manufacturer assume full responsibility & costs for repairing this safety related lighting defect at a local dealership. Properly functioning exterior lighting is an essential safety feature of any vehicle. This malfunction affects my visibility. We purchased this vehicle with the reasonable expectation that critical safety equipment would function properly & that the manufacturer would stand behind defects involving safety issues. I believe it is unreasonable for me to be expected to bear the cost of diagnosis, parts or repair as this is an inherent lighting system issue. I am therefore requesting that the manufacturer cover 100% of all costs. This is a safety issue, not a cosmetic concern & I strongly urge the manufacturer to treat it accordingly. The halo light has been out for a few weeks; there were no warnings that the light was out just noticed dim lighting & neighbor while passing on the road mentioned it.

Red Error code popped up about battery. Then vehicle completely shut down. Was unable to put it in gear in order to move it to a safe place, therefore my vehicle blocked traffic. Fortunately this incident did not occur on the interstate where my vehicle could have been completely totaled or I could have been killed. I have less than 2500 miles on my vehicle, this should not have happened. It is currently in service waiting to be diagnosed.
