The service brake system on my 2024 Mazda CX-90 produces a loud, high-pitched squeaking noise during normal low-speed braking, including when stopping at traffic lights, reversing, and parking. The issue has been present and occurs daily under normal driving conditions. The brake pads and rotors are available for inspection upon request. The squeaking reduces my confidence in braking performance and causes me to alter my braking behavior, particularly in stop-and-go traffic and when braking near pedestrians. In a vehicle used daily for family transportation, unreliable or degraded brake performance puts my safety and the safety of my passengers and other road users at risk. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by an authorized Mazda dealership. On February 25, 2026, I brought the vehicle to Gunther Mazda for this issue. The dealer attempted to address the brake noise at no charge but acknowledged this is a known issue related to the brake pad material and stated no permanent repair is currently available. A copy of the repair receipt from this visit is available. I also contacted Mazda Motor of America directly. A case manager was assigned and confirmed the issue is known across the CX-90 model. Mazda offered a $250 service credit but provided no repair or resolution. Mazda issued Service Alert SA-016/24 (Brake Noise, Judder and Dragging Diagnosis and Servicing) acknowledging brake noise, judder, and dragging on the CX-90 and other models. Despite this bulletin, the dealer repair attempt has not resolved the issue. There are no warning lamps or dashboard messages associated with this condition. The squeaking began at low mileage and has persisted continuously since first noticed. The issue is not intermittent; it occurs with regularity during routine braking.

I am reporting a safety defect involving my Mazda CX-90 with approximately 1,400 miles. The vehicle emits strong chemical fumes into the passenger cabin during normal operation. I first noticed it the night I purchased the vehicle when I was driving it home. The fumes occur both with and without the HVAC system in use. Once present, the odor lingers inside the cabin for an extended period, even after the vehicle is turned off. The exposure causes physical symptoms, including headaches, burning eyes, watering, and irritation while driving. The severity of the symptoms raises concern that harmful fumes or gases are entering and remaining inside the vehicle cabin. The vehicle has been taken to Mazda service centers twice and it is currently there for the third time. The dealerships have stated they are unable to detect the odor and has not performed any effective repair. The condition persists and continues to affect occupant safety. This issue is not consistent with a typical “new vehicle smell.” The intensity, recurrence, and physical symptoms suggest a potential defect allowing chemical or exhaust fumes to enter the passenger compartment. I am submitting this complaint due to concern for my safety and the safety of passengers, and to request investigation into whether this is a broader defect affecting this vehicle model.

The contact owns a 2022 Mazda CX-30. The contact stated that while driving and sneezing, going through a green traffic light, another vehicle crashed into the front driver-side door. There was one individual in the vehicle. The driver-side air bag failed to deploy. The driver mentioned the air bag should have deployed based on the impact. No warning lights illuminated or sounds occurred prior to the crash. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 35 MPH. There was no property damage. The contact sustained pain in the left leg, back, and shoulders. The contact received medical treatment and was provided with pain medication. The vehicle was towed to a salvage lot. The dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate vehicle mileage was 23,000.

The liftgate (trunk) opens sporadically. The system keeps trying to open the truck and it's causing a parasitic drain on my battery. I was stranded 2 hours from my home due to this. My trunk would sporadically beep three times, that is the only warning I received. There are safety recalls for other year of Mazda cx-9 but not my specific even though I am having the same issue.

  • 2018 MAZDA CX-5
    - Santa Rosa Beach, FL

My 2018 Mazda CX-5 AWD (2.5L SKYACTIV-G, non-turbo) was diagnosed by a Mazda dealer with a cracked/leaking cylinder head, a known manufacturing defect in the casting of the aluminum cylinder head. Engine oil is leaking from the rear of the cylinder head onto the exhaust manifold, creating a burning oil smell and visible oil accumulation at the rear of the engine. This is a documented fire hazard. The Mazda dealer confirmed the diagnosis matches Technical Service Bulletin SA-031-21, which Mazda issued in May 2021 specifically for this defective cylinder head design on 2018–2019 CX-5 models. The dealer additionally informed me that Mazda has internally acknowledged this as a growing, widespread problem across the 2018–2021 CX-5 model years, and that a recall may be forthcoming. Mazda customer service denied my goodwill repair claim despite acknowledging the TSB. The estimated repair cost is $7,000. The vehicle is currently not being driven due to the fire risk of oil contacting the exhaust manifold. This defect appears to affect a significant number of 2018–2021 Mazda CX-5 vehicles. I am requesting NHTSA open a formal safety defect investigation and compel Mazda to issue a recall. Multiple other owners have reported the same issue on NHTSA and in owner forums. This is a manufacturing defect not normal wear and tear and poses a serious fire safety risk to consumers.

  • 2024 MAZDA CX-50
    - Clinton , TN

On 02/27/2026, a 2024 Mazda CX-50 (20700 miles) exhibited a severe burning smell following a 3-hour highway drive and a subsequent steep, 2-mile mountain climb to a restaurant in Jasper, TN. The smell was strongly observed by multiple occupants upon exiting the vehicle. On 03/02/2026, a technician at Mazda of Knoxville confirmed via video a 'flat grease ring' slung onto the undercarriage, indicative of a centrifugal lubricant leak from the driveshaft/CV assembly. The proximity of this flammable grease to the hot exhaust system during high-torque operation (mountain climbing) presents a critical fire hazard. Despite visual confirmation of the slinging grease, the dealership issued a blank service invoice, omitting the defect from the official record and returning the vehicle in an unsafe condition. This represents a documented safety defect being suppressed by the manufacturer, posing an unreasonable risk of vehicle fire or catastrophic driveline failure.

The problem is with my tailgate. The mazda cx-90 has an automatic trunk open/close function. My wife and I use teh trunk as directed. The other day we go to open the trunk (with the button) and there was a "pop" as if the door was trying to open under force or tension. Ever since then the trunk will not shut properly, if at all. The entire trunk is now misaligned and cannot close properly. There was no accident or damage to the trunk (other than the misalignment). The Mazda dealership I took it to even confirmed no damage othat than the trunk misalignment. I'm not sure how or why this is happening. There are dozens of reports of this same issue happening on multiple threads on the internet. The trunk gets misaligned towards the passenger side of the vehicle. Please see the following internet forums outlining this issue. [XXX] [XXX] The trunk is misaligned that the driver side of the trunk is not completely shut. The seal is not closed, allowing air, weather, etc. into the car while in operation. There is no light or warning indication that anything is wrong. The vehicle was taken to the mazda dealership and they did everything they could to not solve or address the problem. They advised me to take it to a body shop and stated that "we can confirm the trunk is misaligned, but no part appears to be malfunctioning or broken so we are unable to warranty this." I spent an entire day without my car for them to "confirm that the trunk is misaligned." My hunch is Mazda knows they have a problem and they just want to avoid it and sweep it under the rug. Dealership video will be uploaded. Link to Dealership video of problem: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
