  • 2022 GMC SIERRA 1500
    - FORT WORTH, TX

While driving on the highway at 75mph, the engine stopped responding to the cruise control speed it was set to. The vehicle started to slowly lose speed and the shifting was not normal causing the engine to rev from below 2000 RPMs to about 3500 RPMs, at this point the engine stopped producing power, the transmission was shifted to Neutral by itself, and the check engine light illuminated. While I was able to move to the shoulder and put my hazard lights on, this could've caused an accident in a more congested area. No one was harmed or any accidents occurred. The truck would no longer start, at this point GMC ONStar was called and they provided a tow truck to the nearest GMC dealership. While waiting for the tow truck, I decided to read the codes for the check engine light, P0016 and P0011 codes were populated. The codes were provided to the dealership. The dealership has since then confirmed the engine is seized and a new one will need to be installed. Model of the engine is the GM 6.2L, which currently has an open recall against it for the crankshaft manufacturing defects.

    • What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The issue appears to be with the gear shifter assembly and/or park position sensor within the power train system. The vehicle fails to detect that it is in “Park,” even when the gear lever is physically in the Park position. Yes, the vehicle and component are available for inspection upon request. ? • How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? This malfunction prevents the vehicle from shutting off properly and displays a “Shift to Park” message even when parked. This creates a risk of the vehicle rolling away if the parking brake is not engaged and prevents secure shutdown, potentially draining the battery or creating confusion in an emergency. It compromises both driver and public safety. ? • Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the issue was reproduced and acknowledged by a certified GMC dealership service department. They noted it is a known issue affecting other GM vehicles but stated there is no open recall or warranty extension currently available for my specific model. ? • Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle has only been inspected by a GMC-certified dealership. No inspection has been conducted by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives at this time. ? • Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, a “Shift to Park” message appears on the dash even when the shifter is correctly placed in the Park position. This message began appearing intermittently and has now become a consistent issue over the past few weeks.

Two times with my truck, the transmission has locked up solid while towing a heavy load almost causing my load to shift and wreck my truck in traffic. It happened at 60k miles and again at 68k miles. The truck shutters and then locks up solid on the transmission, then after a second of sliding, it releases and goes into limp mode. This is a serious issue when it is uncontrollable. It felt like my trailer had broken loose and slammed into the cab when it happened. I'm sure it wasn't good on the truck in general. A code scanner read P0747 code and it appears that GMCs recall does not cover my truck in another recall for the same issue with 20-22 model trucks. It is happening all the way up to the 25 year models from what I read.

Since purchasing the vehicle in September with 8 miles there have been several electrical malfunctions. Some “fix” themselves when I restart the vehicle and several have needed to go into service. The first issue was when my mirrors wouldn’t come back up when switching to drive. I disabled the reverse tilt option and had it serviced to be fixed. Apparently it needed an update. More recently I had several malfunctions. My vehicle would lower its self while still in gear, and it wasn’t the normal self leveling. I didn’t not have any warning lights or messages pop up. The next time I started my vehicle and had “service rear axle” warning. I called the local dealership and after restarting the vehicle several times and more error messages, I decided to attempt to drive the vehicle in, all the while recovering several message warnings. On the way I was increasingly loosing brakes and I rolled into their parking lot with no breaks. Since this episode I have had repeated lost connection codes without dash warnings. They first attempted to reprogram the brake control monitor. Then when it continued to lower itself and have other malfunctions it went back into service. They replaced the serial data gateway and reprogrammed it. Since then the vehicle is having lost communication codes every day. It is currently in service to try and figure out what’s causing it and hopefully fix it.

While traveling away from home with my son my vehicle said push to start. I was able to coast over to the side of the two lane highway and attempted several times to restart my vehicle. After several phone calls between two dealerships, I was told “If you can get it here we can help you”. So I had to file a claim with my insurance to have my vehicle towed to a dealership with only having service while the WiFi was operating. The tow truck kept getting pushed further and further back. Over 2 and a half hours later, keeping my son restrained inside the vehicle for safety, luckily an officer stopped and took myself and my son out of the 97 deg heat all the way to our destination another 2 hours away. From July to September my vehicle was in the dealership service dept waiting on a galactic back ordered 6.2 engine and main fuse repair.
