I purchased a 2014 Mazda CX-9 back in May of 2020 w/ roughly 60k on the dash. Literally 7 months later w/ about 72k on the dash, the day after Christmas I was driving to work (I worked in the next state over) on the highway my car just shut down. No warnings, no check engine lights NOTHING! It just completely shut off and would not turn on. Thankfully because of the holiday the highway was pretty empty and I was able to swing my car across the interstate so I wouldn’t get hit by oncoming traffic. After getting out and deciding to check my oil I noticed it looked milky. I had no idea what that meant so I had it towed to a Mazda dealership in the state I live in. It was going to cost me almost $8,000 to put in a new engine because the water pump that was placed inside of the engine failed, which in turn caused my engine to seize. The extended warranty I had on my vehicle was worthless so I ended up paying out of pocket. Thankfully Mazda worked with me and had me prove that I kept up maintenance on the truck so the price was chopped in half. This happened right at the beginning of Covid when the entire world was suffering financially. I still had to make my car payments on top of shelling out 4k on a truck I hadn’t even had for a year. This is a huge issue with a lot of people that own the same vehicle and is extremely dangerous! I could’ve killed someone or worse myself when my vehicle stalled out on the highway.

Front and rear brakes premature wear, would have failed safety inspection under 30,000 miles but brakes were inspected just outside of warranty with metal on metal. RIGHT rear coil spring snapped lower middle of coil while driving on flat even ground. Just outside of warranty.

The infotainment system has a known problem called "Ghost Touch". The screen will randomly change from am to fm radio, make phone calls on its own, change screen during navigation. Mazda knows of the issue with this model. This should be a recall as it can severely distract a person while driving. Mazda says this is not under warranty even though I have extended warranty and the millage is only 32,000. Please make this a recall before a serious accident occurs.

The contact owns a 2016 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle started shuddering and overheating. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the failure was related to a cracked head gasket. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure with the Technical Service Bulletin: 01-03/21; however, the vehicle was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

I noticed my 2017 CX-9 Touring was leaking coolant. It wasn't much but then checked the reservoir which is nearly empty. The car was overheating. I had it checked out by the dealer and initially I was told that it was bad radiator cap. This was fixed and resolved the initial overheating problems. The overheating issues resurfaced and took it a certified mechanic which indicated it was leaking from the engine block. The quote for repair was over $6000 See: Service Bulletin: 01-002/23

"High coolant temperature warning. Stop car at a safe place immediately " came up. Stopped car at a mechanic and diagnosed as coolant leak onto the engine.

I noticed a rattling sound that seemed to come from the rear passenger side wheel. I took it to a mechanic who told me that the rear sub-frame was so rusted that the damper had come loose from the sub-frame and caused the rattling sound. He said that he was unable to reattch the damper because the sub-frame was too rusted. The only solution was to remove the loose damper to eliminate the rattling sound and continue driving that way OR have the rear sub-frame replaced which would cost from $4,000-$6,000.

Car started jerking and on the way home, the car lost all power to the transmission. The check engine light came on as well as the AT and traction lights. Absolutely no power to the transmission. codes P0780 and P0751.

I was pulling into a parking spot. When I do this, my foot is always on the break. I'm an experienced driver (30+ years) and have never had an incident when I felt the car accelerate without my initiation. When I was maybe 5-7 ft from the car in front of me, the car suddenly accelerated (like it was possessed). I immediately slammed on the break and turned the wheel. Thankfully, and amazingly, I avoided hitting the car both in front of me and immediately on my left (the direction I swerved the wheel). No warning lamps, actions, etc were taken by the car itself (other than willing me to smash into the car ahead of me). This incident occurred in a school parking lot. Thankfully, there was no harm to anyone but my confidence in Mazda. But, if I had chosen to pick my children up through the pick-up line, I may have easily hit the car in front of me or a child! Obviously, this can be a tragic situation. Prior to this incident, I have felt that the car regularly does not operate smoothly at slow speeds, especially when accelerating from stop. This is my 3rd Mazda, and I have never felt this lack of control before. I have also noticed that the i-stop works erratically, including when I am moving at 10-30 mph. The light goes on and off when I am slowing down at a light, etc. Plus, when I am stopped at a light, the i-stop will go on for about 20 seconds, then suddenly turn off and the engine will rev up. I shard the stoplight information with the dealer the week after I took possession of the car and was told by the sales manager that this was just normal and a weird part of the electronics of the car. Following this incident, I called the dealer. The service department and manager said that they weren't aware of this issue but took my concern seriously. I then did an online search and found a conversation string on [XXX] with others sharing the same problem. The infotainment system randomly changes screens, places calls, alters routes while vehicle is in use. It makes for a dangerous distraction while driving.
