THOR MOTOR COACH Complaints

While driving my Thor RIZE with the powered Carefree Awning, after a hard turn, the awning randomly partially deploys several times, then return to closed position. I have now added a mirror to allow me to see the awning while driving. A few times after the battery disconnect have been re-engaged after being off for a few days, the first hard turn will have a better chance to result in the awning deploying, however it has not been consistent enough to demonstrate the action to the service department, so no action have been taken by them in the last two years.

Purchased October 8 2022. Vehicle is a 2023 Thor Gemini 24KB on a 2022 Ford chassis. Vehicle has been in for repair of these items for over 30 days. Vehicle warning light notifications - Antilock Brake Fault Hill Start Assist Warning Pre-collision Assist Not Available Adaptive Cruise Control Not Available All Wheel Drive Not Available. It was viewed by Ford technicians. It is stated by Ford technicians the vehicle is not safe to operate. Problem first appeared November 2022.

While traveling the outer skin of a lower compartment door folded off. This occurred in heavy traffic during a vicious windstorm. The repair costs just under $7000. During our first trip after the repair, the skin came off again-this time at a slow speed and with normal weather. On your website, there is a recall for the identical problem in the Thor line of motorcoaches but not the Tuscany. October 29, 2021, NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V845 which reads: "A door skin that separates during transit can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash." I am now looking at another replacement and have received an estimate of over $8000 (explained by inflation and shortage of repair technicians). Please consider extending this same recall for all models of these coaches as they are all produced at the same plant with the same doors by the same personnel. The Awning extends and retracts several times in a row, at about 1 foot extension, on intermittent occasions. If it goes fully out at highway speeds it could release from the van and potentially hit another vehicle, causing serious damage up to and including death. Thor has not issued a recall on this vehicle but other vehicles (Travato) with this same Awning have been recalled. This is an accident waiting to happen, actually it has happened numerous times already.

On several occasions the carefree electric awning would extend while driving. I had to pull the power fuse.

The double pane windows on the sides of the motorhome separate which allows the window pane to fall off into the road while traveling. This pane of glass falling out at highway speeds could cause serious harm to other travelers and vehicles.

The contact owns a 2022 Thor Fourwinds Motorhome built on a 2021 Chevrolet Express-NAV Chassis and equipped with an unknown expandable ladder located in the closet of the motorhome. The contact stated that while utilizing the ladder to take a look at the bunk located in the cab of the motorhome, the aluminum brackets of the ladder that she had attached to the bunk brackets to hold the ladder to the bunk, detached and the ladder fell forward while to contact felled 4 ft. on her back. The contact stated that the label indicated that the ladder could hold up to 300 pounds and she weighed 133 pounds. The contact sustained black and blue bruises on the entire right leg. Additionally, the contact sustained pain in the right shoulder. The contact sought medical assistance. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to bring the ladder in for replacement. The part was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

At 10000 miles this developed issues with the transmission not shifting into gear. Dealer repair shop stated the “ISM” is not communicating with the vehicle. After, installing a replacement part, the problem remains.

The Thor Palazzo has 2 braces in the front "nose" area of the coach-these braces are metal brackets that attach the front fiberglass nose to the area that contains the generator and fans for the air conditioner and other front-end components. These braces attach at both ends: the front part of the brace attaches w/ screws to a piece of wood that is then screwed into the fiberglass on the very front of the motorhome. The back side of the brace is attached w/ screws to a metal piece. This bracket acts as a support to the front windshield of the coach. This piece of metal on the passenger side of the motorhome came completely off & was drug under the front of the motorhome. Luckily, we were at an intersection when this happened and were able to retrieve the piece of metal. Had this piece came off when we were driving on the interstate, it could have been deadly. The piece measures about 15" in length & is heavy metal. It could have damaged the motorhome, tow vehicle, cars driving around us or become a projectile and flew into the windshields of cars behind us injuring others. We found the other bracket on the driver's side to be detached on one side and it pulled off with little resistance using one hand, so it was close to coming off as well. The brackets are attached with screws that had either come loose, had been sheared off or were missing. We had a couple of screws that were hanging underneath the front fiberglass nose. We have taken this to our dealership where it is currently being worked on and Thor Motor Coach has been notified. In searching this online, this has happened to several other Palazzo owners, but the design is still being used. We had no notice that this was an issue until it happened to us. Without the brackets, the windshield is not supported as it should be and driving to the dealership we had quite a bit of movement in the motorhome windshield.
